antihistamines and burning skin

Recommended Posts

Has anyone found any relief from burning skin by taking an antihistamine on occasion?  My skin symptoms seem to get worse sometimes when I eat and then if I take an antihistamine they get better.  I don't want to depend on antihistamines and don't know whether they really help or it's a coincidence.  Anyone have any thoughts??

I wish I could say that I'd noticed a difference when I've taken antihistamines, but I'd tried it in the past and it didn't work.

Sometimes alcohol works, but we aren't supposed to drink.

I've also found opiates work a little, but no idea if we're "allowed" to take them. I'm kind of on the liberal side of taking medication when I'm looking for relief.

I've taken high doses of kava kava with some relief, but it left me mighty drugged feeling. I'm talking the root, grated up in a traditional manner in the blender. Not the weaker pills.

Hi, yes Ive found that taking benadryl helped with burning and stinging skin...I take it everynight...I stopped it for a couple of months last year and had a lot more stinging and prickling...so I went back on it. It doesnt help the severe nerve sensations in my feet though. So far the cymbalta and elavil dont help the pain in my feet either. Good luck p, hope you find relief soon :) Colleen

Hi Blue orchidlady, How r u doing? I saw in your sig you accidentally ctd xanax and seized...A similar thing happened to my mom last Oct...she was ctd in the hospital and the second day had multiple seizures...it left her with brain inflammation and altered mental status with hallucinations, and disorintation to time...she went to brain rehab for a couple of weeks and then to a snf. She is still there...getting better but slowly. Did you expereience anything like that...I hope not...and I hope you dont mind me asking...its just been so devastating for her. Would really appreciate learning more about your experience...my mom was on xanax as well...she remains on it now too. You take care and have a nice night. :) Colleen

Thanks Colleen - Happy to have your input.  I would take benadryl every night, but last summer I ran into a problem with my hair falling out.  I had been to an allergist for all kinds of tests including tests to see why I get so hot when my symptoms are bad.  He put me on what I consider to be a huge dose of several antihistamines - 2 claritin and 3 150mg zantac a day.  Aside from making me feel drugged, I began to notice my hair coming out.  I cut back because I couldn't tolerate them.  Since I have taken benadryl and claritin off and on for years with no problems I figured it must be the Zantac.  I stopped that and now my hair is growing back.  I wish it hadn't been the Zantac because Zantac works on the H2 receptors which are in your stomach and my symptoms increase after eating.  I'm now trying to balance my hair and my burning skin and will keep on with the benadryl when the symptoms are bad enough.  What a tightrope trying to balance symptoms and other issues that may require medication on occasion.  Again, thanks

Hi Colleen. I'm okay. Roughing it out a bit some days, better other days. Your poor mother, ugh. I can't even imagine how devastated you must be by this. I didn't have any brain swelling or, I already had it at the time, I had a concussion from a car accident and was very out of it, being kept for "observation" basically. I had lacerations from my seat belt too. I had a semi-altered mental status... very drowsy and don't fully remember being there nor can I remember the accident. Well. All I know is that I wasn't given medication while there. It was about 48 hours after the last dose I'd taken. So at some point, I was lying there, very very drowsy, and I began having serious hallucinations - both visual and physical. It was bizarre. I wasn't thinking straight. The next thing I knew, I was staring at a bunch of people. They gave me IV ativan (I think). At any rate, that's all that happened. The hallucinations stopped with the medication. They said the seizure was from the c/t w/d which they didn't realize I was having until they asked some family members if I took medication and put two and two together. I can only hope your mother will recover over time. I can't think of any great words of wisdom though... just that she should hang in there. And that if she wants to come off the medication, it can be done without seizures for sure by slowly withdrawing. My very best wishes to you both!

Hi Parethesia!  Haven't seen you in a while.  If you are trying antihistamines, it seems like you figured out how much food affects withdrawal, and the symptoms it can rev.  A more natural approach you may want to look into Quercetin, which is a natural antihistamine.  I also looked into something called Histarest, but never purchased it.  I use the following link which aids in my blurry eyes as well as inner vibrations and other physical sympotms.  http://www.jarrow.com/product/263/Quercetin_500

The only other thing for me that seems to help my muscle symptoms are drinking something with electrolytes like sugar free gatorade or smart water.  Good luck, and please know that in time these sensations will lessen.

Hi Lislis - Thanks for the advice on quercetin.  I tried it about 6 months ago at a time when I was having a hard time with any supplements.  I am now able to tolerate a multi vitamin, flax oil, borage, magnesium, vitamin D and resveratrol.  So I think I'll give quercetin another try.  I know it's a powerful antihistamine - just forgot about it.
