Cough Medicine with Codeine?

[Fr...]

Recommended Posts

I'm still coughing after being sick for almost four weeks. It goes away and then it's back again. It's also making my already too high blood pressure climb.

I just left my doctor's office and he gave me a prescription for cough medicine with codeine in it. I finished my wean three months ago, is it safe for me to take this medicine.

Thats a toughy. I was 3 months free when I had to have surgury and they put me on codein. It made me go back into wd after only after 4 days. My body didn't take to it well. But now at 7 months if I have to take one, which is very rare, it doesn't bother me. The tramadol I use for my arthritis does bother me.

This is a tough call. Maybe give it a shot and keep track of your sx, maybe it will not effect you. I say go very moderate with it until you know if it effects your wd sx.

Keep me posted

Thank you Josephine, I did a search and it would seem like it's not too bad but I'm very afraid. I've gone through enough! I have it here and will only take it if my coughing gets really bad.

Oh dear...can you call him/her back and ask for non-codeine cough syrup?  My sweetie is allergic to codeine and he was given something without it that worked just fine...

Frannie,

Found this on www.benzobuddies.org/forum/index.php?action=post;topic=50051.0;last_msg=673928

People sometimes need to take opiate based pain killers e.g morphine or codeine. These drugs wwill not prevent recovery from benzodiazepine[/b]withdrawal as they work on the brain through a completely different mode of action. They are however addictive and should not be stopped suddenly. They can usually be tapered off faster than benzodiazepines sometimes by switching to a long acting opiate such as methdaone. Pethidine should be avoided though because the active metabolite of pethidine acts as a proconvulsant. Pethidine for this reason is generally only prescribed for short term usage to avoid toxicity.

Hope this helps!

Frannie are you on any meds for your high BP?  I mention this because a commonly prescribed group of BP meds, the ace inhibitors, are notorious for causing a horrible cough in many people.

Thank you Challis, I wouldn't be taking it long enough to get addicted. I will only do it if the coughing gets severe when I lie down at night.

Hi Minnie, I'm on an ace inhibitor since some time and it's the only BP med that I can take. This cough came with a virus that is know for leaving a bad cough. Thank you for your post.

Frannie, don't rule out the ace inhibitor if  your cough doesn't go away in a reasonable time frame.  My hubby was on one for a long while before getting a cough caused when the pollen levels were high.  After months and months of antihistamines, antibiotics, cough suppressants, even cortisone, his ace inhibitor was changed and viola the cough went away.  Hang in there and good luck.

Hi Frannie,

No my hubby was put on a different class of BP meds when the cough wouldn't go away.  The ACE inhibitors make your airways sensitive so that things you could normally handle and overcome, such as allergies or a virus, become ongoing and problematic.  But maybe for you it is just the lingering virus.  Don't worry too much, take your cough meds when you need it and see how things come out.  Hang in there, we will get through all this!

My wife took sodium benzonatate (tessalon) for allergic cough. I dont know the spelling. I think it worked pretty good. The general concensus is that we should stay away from opiate/opioid medications.

There are other meds for cough. Of course they may want to investigate why you are coughing. Is it an allergy? Those type of questions.

wish you good healing

Frannie,

I think everyones bodies are differant and maybe I am more sensitive when it comes to the narcotic pain killers. Something as mild as the tramodol sets me off.

Hope the cough gets better soon. Windering do you have allergies?

Jo
