Migraine-Day 2

Hello BB Heroes & Heroines,

This is the second day with a migraine.  :'(   Any tips? Please. If you believe in prayer, would you offer up one for me? This is just miserable.

Appreciatively,

T2

Hi teacher,

I hope you are feeling better.  When I used to get migraines, I would lie in a dark, quiet room with a damp cloth over my eyes, and imagine that I was floating on a cloud, that was softer than a cotton ball.

the best to you

Hello T2,

I have dealt with migraines for many years. You could ask your Doctor about taking Maxalt or Imitrex for them. Both worked well for me. Just a little warning on taking Imitrex, after taking it, it does increase the anxiety level. It always gave me a rush before quitting the benzo, but when I was going through w/d, it really wound me up.

Other then that, what pj suggested, does help.

Hi Teacher,

Sorry about the migraine, I know how they suck. I had migraine for months without any day of relief and I can't take any medication because of the side effects. I managed with homeopathic remedies and tried this videos.

Now I only have migraines maybe a couple of times per month and any of these videos help me a lot.

Also try to avoid food that can trigger migraines like chocolate, dairies, cheese. Ohhh I forgot I also take magnesium during the acute attack and during the time it lasts. Only 200 mg per day, I stop once the migraine is gone.

I hope you can find some relief soon.

Hugs

Laura

You have my prayers, T2!. See my other migraine post... Magnesium never helped me, but Butterbur root did, briefly. I got a free sample, online. Also, I would use a "headache tape", soft relaxing, self-hypnotic stuff. Forget woman's name who produced it... something odd. I haven't used these aids in years, because now, they are must less frequent, and I use meds that I don't want to mention here (not benzos, but others). But if I get a bad one, nothing helps; and it's hospital time!  :(

Try to find a good neurologist or headache clinic.

Make sure you get enough sleep, too. And some ginger teas (or ginger ale) help with the nausea.

Thanks to you all for your prayers and migraine tips. Before having a hysterectomy, had migraines at least twice a month--so I think they were hormone related. The one I had a while back came on after a severe sand storm. I used some gel packs on my face and stayed in a dark room. I am very appreciative to each and every one of you! .......................T2

Teacher 2,

I did pray for you! I hope you are feeling somewhat better. All these weather changes (depending upon where you live) also contribute, I believe... And do you know what else contributes? DRUGS! Lunesta has it right on the label" can cause headaches". I plan soon myself to go back to a bit of magnesium... (too much gives me the trots, though).

Anyway, again, I hope things get better for you.  :)

Thank you ever so kindly, TryingAgain! You are so right on about drugs causing headaches. If I dare take my dosage of clonazepam & sertraline off schedule, I can be sure that a headache will set in. Can usually bear a headache & take one x-strength acetaminophen--cannot tolerate aspirin Or nsaids, but a migraine is in a different category--unrelenting pain, nausea, jagged aura of light. Think I might need a truckload of those face masks with the carbon filter!

Be careful with Acetaminophen; don't take more than 2000 mg. per day (1000 mg. even better, of course). It can blow out your liver.

The article below says 4 grams max, but for people with compromised systems (me, for example), I go by the 2000 mg. rule of thumb, and try to take more like only 1000 mg.

(You probably already know all this, but I thought it couldn't hurt to post it).

I can't find the original post, but I suppose you've had your migraines evaluated? Be careful with Imitrex, too (I myself cannot take that stuff... if you have basilar or hemiplegic migraine, you can't take those Triptan drugs). It is so important to get an evaluation, if you haven't already.

Take care.

Hi teacher2,

My daughter suffers with migraines and has recently discovered a product called Migrastick a roll on remedy for the forehead. She carries this with her at all times and says it is a lifesaver. and of course if this works for you, you wont need to add any meds to the CNS.

Hope this helps.

Debbie  :)

Imitrex (triptans)! If they are truly migraines they should respond to this type of medication.

Other suggestions when it comes to migraines are just like.. Ha. I can't think of a metaphor.

So glad the migraine is gone! My worst one lasted for 3 weeks! It wasn't fully intense for that entire time, though. My fully intense ones are so bad I throw up so violently I break blood vessels in my eyes and get diarrhea at the same time. I literally want to die when they are that intense. I started on the benzos because of the migraines. But nothing really helped except imitrex or midrin ... and they took midrin off the market, I heard because it is addictive? .. (which makes me wonder why they don't take benzos off the market??) I can't take imitrex anymore because of the high blood pressure I got as a result of benzo addiction. I'm taking Feverfew .. seems to help a little as a preventive. I said all that to say .. I guess my migraines are way too intense and drawn out to NOT be treated with something.

I have one now, but it is mild. (I'm able to have lights on and be on the computer but can't handle noise... good thing I am out in the middle of nowhere and so can't hear anything but the rain falling (and my benzo induced tinnitus)... rain is such a pleasant sound so it doesn't bother me, but sometimes even the sound of typing is too intense!)

I'm glad your headache is gone!  :)

Thanks, Gail! So sorry that migraines are so awful for you!!! Are they hormone related at all? I ask, because before the hysterectomy in 2003, I would have at least 2 migraines per month and always when a period began. Have suffered with very few migraines since. Hope you are feeling better soon.....................T2

Hi T2,

My migraines did not seem to be hormone related, but I can't be sure, because my hormones were totally messed up. Completely whacked out as a result of the BCP. The BCPs were strong enough to sterilize a cow at that time and they completely messed up my cycle and, for lack of better description, nuked my own hormonal system. It took years to straighten out. I was anemic for quite some time during that mess.

My headaches are a combination tension and migraine and I do have a low-grade tension headache that has lingered since Aug 30, 2006, triggered by stress and yet another migraine. It just won't go away, it waxes and wanes, but won't completely go away. I think the tinnitus (caused by the drugs) has something to do with its lingering. I am hoping that when the tinnitus goes, so too, will the headache.

I will be off the benzos for three years now, in the first week of July and I am feeling much better.

I'm hoping your bronchitis is short lived.

Hey guys, joining late in this discussion.

I currently have the jagged lights of a migraine getting underway. No pain, yet.

Feedback very much appreciated -

* this is the 6th migraine in two weeks.

* I've had two episodes of violent vomiting in between migraines that required ER visits

* my WBC is elevated (24)

* on 2nd AB -finished Macrobid, now on second day of Keflex

* I'm 57, 8 years postmenopausal

* had migraines in my 30's pre benzo days

* average one migraine a year in last 15 years until this month

* is this something coming back as I get lower on Valium? Currently at 2 mg.

For some reason, this is so disheartening. It's like the straw that broke the camels back. I have to say to my long suffering husband, "I'm sorry, I'm going to need a quiet, dark room for the next X hours and you'll have to feed me if I eat."

It's like I can almost manage the taper with some grace, but this one added thing seems just too much. The first 5 I dealt with but this 6th one is winning.

T2  - I'm really sorry. I know how horrible it is.

Thanks guys,

Flip

Hi Flip,

This has probably already posted and I missed it, so forgive me if I'm behind. Do you have a uti? Are the AB's for a uti? I recognize macrobid because it was given to me 2 years back for a uti and it did nothing for me. The AB's you're on could be a contributing factor in your oncoming headache.

Sorry for all the questions :-[..have you had a hysterectomy?...99% of the migraines I experienced over the years left after I had an emergency hysterectomy. Ugh! I hope you feel better soon!

T2, thanks for your interest. It helps just knowing someone cares, doesn't it?  :smitten:

I still have all my parts. ;D

They first thought uti but the cultured urine showed no unusual bacteria. So they don't know. I will have an abdominal CT Monday or Tuesday. I don't have any abdominal pain, or flank pain.

So yes, the Macrobid was for a UTI. Maybe needlessly. The Keflex is to counter the unspecified infection that makes my white count too high. Here's the odd thing - the first migrain was a full 72 hours before the first violent vomiting and ER trip. No headache at all at time of vomiting.

And I feel better this morning. Mild headache but not the brutal migraine kind. The jagged aura lights just suddenly descend with no apparent warning or stressor and I'm incapacitated for several hours.

I don't have any of the usual diet triggers like caffeine, cheese, nitrates, chocolate, etc. I thought I knew how to play this game, but this feels different. I can't take imitrex, makes me very ill.

Any thoughts appreciated.

Thanks,

Flip

Hi Flip!

The first time I had a migraine was at the age of 23. I began to notice a pattern emerging--low hanging fluorescent lights, an overhead projector light, and the sun would trigger them and then noticed that my upcoming period would bring one or two on. Like you, first jagged prismed lights would appear until my vision was very compromised. As soon as the jagged lights were gone, BAM, the headache from hell would arrive. Usually, they would last 3 days. Massive doses of ibuprophen was the only relief. This really tore up my stomach though--had a bleeding ulcer from all the ibuprophen. After a hysterectomy in '03, the migraines were 98% contained. Rarely have I had one since the hyst.--a super sandstorm will bring one on though.
