Head Pressure worse when talking.

I need your guys help on this one.  My problem is I have left side head throbbing and tingling all day, but when I talk there is constricting head pressure where It's almost so tight and difficult when I'm talking or I guess moving my jaw, the only thing that has ever taken this constricting tight debilitaing pressure away is Klonopin.  Do you guys think this is W/d? Do you think it has to do with my jaw? I have no jaw pain just the left side of my head. When I"m talking I can feel my temporal muscle move, I have been to Neuro's(the prescribed me Neurontin and Flexeril which is a muscle relaxer) The only thing that has ever helped is K, the muscle relaxer Flexeril helped but I was so tired the next day I couldn't function.

Any thoughts or Ideas?? The only other specialist that I haven't seen is a TMJ specialist, I have absolutely no jaw pain whatsover though. Just the concentrated temporalis muscle area.

TMJ can present itself in different ways.  Pain isn't always an indication.  It may be worth getting this checked by a neuromuscular dentist to at least rule it out.

Head pressure was a major symptom of mine for the first couple of years of withdrawal, and talking would make it worse.  I think it was due to the change in breathing patterns while speaking.  I never noticed any muscle movement, though.

Caddo,

Please tell me more about Breathing Patterns while speaking because with the intense pressure I get out of breath quickly, what does the breathing have to do with w/d?

you might be helping me here.

  thanks.

Does anything help the change in breathing patterns? Water?  I feel like that's whats making me so out of breath and flushed at my job when I'm talking to people all day.

I just mean that when we speak we are doing a lot more exhaling, and inhaling becomes more intermittent.  The way it relates to someone in benzo withdrawal, at least in my case, is that for someone that is already dizzy with head pressure it doesn't take much to make it worse.  This is just my theory, though.

I first noticed this happening when I was in cognitive behavioral therapy.  I would go in experiencing my normal amount of dizziness and head pressure, but after a few minutes it would be worse.  I began to notice a correlation between how much I was speaking and how dizzy I was getting.  If my therapist began speaking more, and I was consequently speaking less, the dizziness and head pressure would go back down to baseline.  Many people with autonomic dysfunction complain of the same thing happening to them.

Looking at your other symptoms I think what you're experiencing is likely from withdrawal, but you still may want to rule out TMJ.

What's Autonomic Dysfunction?

The functions of the body, such as digestion and heart beats, that don't require conscious effort to stimulate, are autonomic.  Therefore, the part of the nervous system that controls these functions is the autonomic nervous system.  In autonomic dysfunction the brain stops communicating properly with this part of the nervous system.  It can cause things like low blood pressure, rapid heart beat, lightheadedness, dizziness, and digestive issues.  I thought I had this before learning about benzo withdrawal.  I actually got diagnosed with exercise intolerance, which means that my blood pressure was dropping upon postural change(from lying to sitting, sitting to standing), but apparently it was just a symptom of benzo withdrawal.

have your problem for a while

from what i read in aston manual it is a normal wd  side effect

the tention in your neck muscles causes you to have that feeling

also i am lookng into connection with benzo and trigger points

if you look up trigger points /facial release

i have them and they cause alot of symptoms unrelated to benzo wd

certain ones give you certain symptoms

i have them in my traps and muscle that involves upper neck

and top of shoulders.

they are knots that develop that cause tension,pain,numbness,hot/cold

blurry vision,

of course the tight band around the head feeling is all benzo

Tension in the back of my neck and in my jaw was one of the first symptoms I had.  It went away quickly, though.

  • 2 months later...

I have something like this and today, went for a hike, and it improved. This was the first time I've exercised in a while. I noticed that my blood pressure was really, really strange. Obviously low because when I'd sit down and stand up while hiking, I would have up to a five-minute head rush. Also, I have a flushed feeling in my arms and legs. During the head rush, I would also feel increased head pressure that went away a LOT when I moved around and got my heart rate back up. Now my theory is that it's from low blood pressure. Mine's normally very low anyways. Usually around 90/60.

I also noticed after the hike, I went to the store and while walking around, started to feel very disoriented and derealized, and then wondered if it was connected. So I went to the car and lay down for about ten minutes and it improved. I strongly suspect it's connected. I have no idea why though. Earlier in the taper, I had a feeling of intense head pressure which was muscles and jaw related. But this isn't like that.

Well, I don't know if this helps, but I hope so. I didn't actually take my blood pressure, but since I've had very low blood pressure with fainting in the past, once I noticed the difference when exercising, I also noticed how similar the symptoms are to that, only much, much more pronounced right now. I had a tilt table test which I failed years ago; this is, for me, the same feeling.

The feeling is a lot like coming out of a pool for the first time after swimming a long time. I feel incredibly heavy and tingly and light-headed to the point of near-fainting. Like my head is in a blood pressure cuff. It could be high blood pressure too, but it seems related to me in my case.

You might not be having this, but it's something worth sharing since for me it was reassuring and also kind of cathartic to realize it was this simple. You might see if it improves if you can get your heart rate up? Or if it sets off your symptoms.
