Benzo withdrawal and burning smells

Recommended Posts

I could smell Lysol on occasion for months during and after withdrawal.  I haven't used that product in decades.  Once in a while I still smell it.  Strange.

I had a strange burning like smell as well.  It lasted for 1 day only.  Strangest thing was that I smelled it in different places.  It even woke me up that night because I thought something in my house was on fire!  It was gone the next day.  I could never pint point what it was.  Noone else smelled it but me.  :pokey:

Thanks everyone, I suspected it was just another withdrawal SX but it sure helps to hear of others who have experienced the same SX.

I thought I may have been going nutz. ::)

I've had this in the past while being a yo yo user on ativan. I wasnt benzo wise back then... so i thought it was just a symptom of bad anxiety.

After reading your post it made it click that ive been through ativan w/d many many times in the past 4 years. =)

I remember walking into Target... and my heart was just racing with bad anxiety, and i remember smelling the fumes of fresh paint. i asked a lady infront of me if she smelled it. she said "no."

Then while checking out I asked the cashier if they have been repainting in here, he said "no." Of course I was in more state of fear and confusion. Probably popped a couple ativan after that. lol.

It had to have been a part of withdrawal.

Hang in there. =)

This is my second withdrawal attempt and I got it last time as well.

Come to think of it, while on benzos off and on for some 15 years, I have had it many times but never made the connection.

I have had an intermittent sense of smelling something chalky or something sour.  The sour smell seems to be coming from my own pores, but it comes and goes like the chalky smell.  I know when a wave is starting because it begins with the chalky smell.  I'm probably not describing the odor exactly right, but I definitely know it when I smell it.

This most likely has nothing to do with your experiences, but sensory seizures can cause distortion in smell, vision, taste and touch. I have been diagnosed with a simple partial seizure disorder and specifically olfactory seizures. My seizures start with a strong alcohol-gas type odor that only I can smell. I get confused, ask everybody around, "Can you smell that?" "What's that smell, we have to get out of here." A little embarrassing. Everything around me becomes distorted and I sort of space out. My husband and family say that I say and do strange things, but I can only remember the beginning of the seizure and coming out of the seizure. (I don't convulse.) I was diagnosed at a young age and they have gotten less frequent with time. I never had a seizure during my (ultimately unsuccessful)  benzo withdrawal a couple of years ago.

I know it's a far stretch, but not entirely impossible. Just thought I'd throw it out there.

You may also want to google olfactory hallucinations . There is some interesting information out there concerning these "smells" and how they relate to the brain.

My waves tend to start with the sour smell you described; kinda like your pours are seeping from garlic.

In my case , my day is quite normal since I am doing a real small taper rate. It is just this hot electric type smell that seems to be here to stay for now! :P
