Setback from drinking?

Hi guys,

Today is my 3 month anniversary. I should be encouraged by this but 2 nights ago a wave hit and has left me feeling worse than at any point since stopping. Sorry for my negativity. Thought I was through the woods as I had been quite active and was just struggling with some mild social anxiety, tinnitus and a few other small things. Sadly, I may have caused this. I drank a little sake on Saturday, in alcohol content, equivalent to a glass and a half of wine. I felt a little drunk but my head cleared within an hour. Is it likely that this is a reaction to such a small amount of alcohol? I hadn't had a drop since November. How much of a setback could this be?

Thanks guys

Hi GazTop,

From what I have learned from a few people that I know on here, most sxs subside after a week or two.

I hope your setback isn't to to bad.

*Hugs* to you,

Tink

Thanks Tink, good to hear.

The derealisation has reappeared, I have much more anxiety than I've had before, my legs are restless again and I seem to have forgotten how to sleep. This could just be a bad wave as it was such a small amount of alcohol. Hoping it'll lift shortly.

Hi Gaztop.  Congrats on 3 months off!  A few days to a week seems about right.  I personally would suggest going easy on the alcohol, maybe refrain til summer if not longer.  I had some wine around 7 months when I was feeling pretty much recovered (80% or better).  After a month or two of excess, my BP went up, cog fog returned, GI symptoms... at 9 months off. Everyone is a little different though. I'd go easy for a while.  If I had to do it over again, I'd probably try to refrain from alcohol in the first year off.  I waited 18 months to have a cocktail but I did drink some wine.

I had problems even with a half of a glass of red. I still have problems with alcohol unfortunately - it throws me into "gloom and doom" mode. So, in my case even a very small amount is enough to destabilize. However, many pepole are not so sensitive.

I guess you may have to experiment and see. I experimented and concluded that I can drink a glass a week maximum.

The good news is that the setback usually doesn't last longer than two weeks.

I found that too much red wine did not agree with me.  Now if I want to have two glasses of wine, I'll have one glass of white (maybe before dinner) and one glass of red with dinner.  I think it also makes a difference whether one is drinking on an empty stomach.  If I have one glass of anything on an empty stomach, I do feel it more, although I don't know that I'd say I had any more issues the next day.  I'd also avoid any drink with carbonation which can deliver things faster and upset the GI so no rum and cokes for me ;).  For that matter, the coke and sugar in addition to the fact that alcohol is sugar would also potentially cause more issues if your system is sensitive.  Also, some of the diet programs that are more lenient once you've lost the weight, suggest that if you have a glass of wine, have it in place of dessert, which I sometimes do too and it may help to offset any reactions your CNS might have the next day.

Thanks guys.

It was a bad move but I may have arrived here anyway without the alcohol- who knows? This is touching on the acute wd experience I had following a rapid taper before I reinstated. I never really had an acute stage following my more sensible taper so perhaps I'm going in now although you'd think that'd be unlikely. Either way, not having a great deal of fun this end. Hope you're all doing better.

hi GazTop alcohol works the same way as benzo on the reseptors in the brain so when you drink is like take the meds all over again you should stay away from any alcohol for 1 year and even then start out with wine ....love in JESUS...kate7
