Is anyone currently tapering or post benzo in their 20's?? would like to hear your experience with w/d and after if your healed or protracted. since i barely see any young people on here thought id start up a thread for us. :)

Im 26. I actually got hooked on benzos by abusing them  :-[  Wen thru an unnecessary long taper. I messed up twice (not benzo wise), once by cutting too fast and once by drinking too much alcohol. Finally 3rd time was a charm was able to get off but was A LOT harder the third time. Had crazy w/ds towards the end. Now im one month and 2 weeks off and a lot of it has left but some still remain, mainly Anxiety, overstimultaion, and muscle spasms. My GI stuff has calmed down almost non existent but still there.  and some just overall weird thoughts. Thats my story!

metheral,

that is awesome that you were able to find a rehab that you can stay in for a year. can i ask what the facility is? what type of facility? when i realized i flared my symptoms again horribly i really wanted to find somewhere like that. obviously i know i can do it again, but i really questioned my ability and desire to. thought a facility like that to keep me safe might not be the worst idea.

also,

do any of you guys struggle w the idea that we are "running out of time" to live. I know that 23 is probably considered young - an i know life is long - but i have these horrible thoughts about it not being worth it to recover again because i wont have enough time to enjoy it when it ends again.

23 is young right??

my recovery has been a nightmare. i think i am so sensitive because i cold turkeyd when i cam off. since i have been off i have had several setbacks - from surgeries, allergy medication, and most recently i am not 100 percent positive - but think it may have been from some b vitamins.

after i took some allergy medicines it flared me horribly. it took me 20 months from that point to get to where i felt "normal" again. it was amazing. remembering how that felt is the only thing that is keeping me going right now. i pray this flare will be a different experience than the last.

6 months is better than 0, 12 is better than 6 months, and a year and a half is way better than a year. its all a progression for me.

My history is a bit complex but the short answer is I did a relatively rapid taper (4 months) off of 12 mgs of Valium.  I wasn't on benzos consistently for very long.  I am obviously quite sensitive.  I am also 6.5 months pregnant and wonder if the hormones are making things more difficult for me.

28 and feeling like an old woman. I am 15 months post and had started to improve, but then I needed to taper my a/d and that threw me for a loop. I agree, it feels like we're losing what are supposed to be the best, most carefree years of our lives.

22, post taper. Everyday isn't sunshine and puppies, but I feel completely different from when I first jumped.

This experience has given me the much overdo time I need to find out who I am.

its a place in vancouver, B.C it a facciliy for mental health and addictions.  Its good to have a safe place and good guidence.

The only down side is that there people here with serious mental illness's.  It reminds me that i'm definatly not mentally ill,  its all just from benzo's

Ps: WHAT AGE DID YOU GUYS START TAKING BENZOS?  I WAS 18 I'M 26, SO ITS BEEN 8 YEARS

i was 19 - 23 now.

metheral - does the program cost money? covered by your insurance? im sure a year long program wouldnt be cheap unless you somehow managed a scholarship. that program sounds interesting - i like how it is long term.

Im 29. Still tapering and feeling awesome! I am pretty sure I am going to heal quickly at the end of my taper. It started really really rough, but as I got lower and lower, the better I have felt. I still take a hit after each cut and another one that lasts a day after a week or so, but it is very manageable. I know what to expect and it makes it easier. I am getting windows during my taper that I haven't felt since before w/d set in. I know there is healing going on each cut I make and that when I get hammered, its just my brain healing and its not so bad. Hammered isnt the right word. Although it has seemed like hell, this process has been very enlightening. I think all of us come out better people in the end. Good luck to you. - Frontsider

I was 19 when I first started benzos and I got off at 22 then because of a bad reaction I got back on at 23 and back off at 23.  :o Ughh so frustrating! I'm almost 4 months off now and still dealing with a lot of symptoms.  :(

Well mines kind of complicated since i used it recreational.  started using when i was about 17-19 but very far and apart i would say 1-2 times a month at most? stopped till i was about 22 and then again used it far and apart till i was about 23 going on 24 i used it about 3 times a week. Then @ 24 used it everyday till now that i came off at 26.  :(
