at the 9 month point, FINALLY getting some insomnia relief!

Insomnia has been one of my most difficult and persistant symptoms during this entire process, and it also looms large in my mind because horrible, insufferable, chronic insomnia (which latter turned out to be due to a missed thyroid diagnosis, now treated) was the reason I was put on benzos to begin with.

I'm two days short of my 9 month anniversary, and in the last month, I've had record numbers of sleep-filled nights.  I've had maybe 4 totally sleepless nights in the last month, and probably about 10+ (and counting, I seem to be on a roll) nights where I slept all the way through, or woke up and fell instantly back to sleep.  I have also, on most nights, been falling straight asleep, too.

I'm still using benedryll and melatonin to assist in falling asleep, but I've basically cut the dose in half for now because I was getting stuck awake, again, when I woke up in the middle of the night so I'd wind up taking something and at the moment that it largely not necessary, any more.  As I come to feel that sleep is more of a sure thing rather than a lucky break I'll cut back more, but I want to give it a little more time since I only stopped the middle of the night adjuncts a week and a half ago.

Anyway, that's my good news!

That's great news Sweet G! :)

I too had a hard bout of insomnia. It occured 10 months post valium taper. I'm not sure if it was a protracted benzo symptom or from a more recent taper from low doses of remeron.

I had 5 sleepless nights in a 2 month period. Also 5 nights of 1-2 hours, about 5 nights 2-3 hours, and so on. It was very frustrating for me especially since I'm part time on call for work duty and my shift hours change so much.

Again, great news! I also use melatonin. Although it's been about 10 months since that bad bout, I still continue with melatonin because of my work schedule plus I haven't completely regained full confidence in my ability to sleep consistantly.

Here's wishing you better nights sleeps from now on!

Just popping in to say its so great to read that there is hope for us suffering from insomnia, its my worst struggle, was put on the benzos for it and now have it of course during withdrawal but I am hoping that once I am free I will start to regain my sleep. I too have struggled with shift work for over 40 yrs and will be returning to work(neccesary due to poor financial choisces and life situations I have found myself in), hope your success continues. please keep posting to give fellow sufferers hope. That' great! It's great to see good news on here.  We all need to read it. I know it contributes to my feeling safe.  When all you guys are doing better - I feel like it's only a matter of time for me.

Thanks for this today.

So true.  The main reason that I have been able to make it through this long and drawn out process is because I have never once waived in my belief that no matter how long this lasted that it was a temporary thing and that I'd only have to do it exactly one time ever.

The two reasons that I have always felt secure in my belief of this were that A) very few people here are past the two year point and you can count on one hand the people who are here past the three year point and B) because of all the people who I had watched suffer and suffer for so long, who I knew had truly had it as bad as I had if not worse, who posted when they finally started seeing that relief that they had been looking for for so long.

In order to give back to my community, I plan to post about it when I finally have some breakthroughs.  This sleep thing is huge.  I have finally turned the corner on it.  Even if I backslide into insomnia (totally plausible given how these symptoms wax and wane) I have solid proof that I will not be stuck like that for the rest of my life and I have a clearer picture of what my life is going to look like in the future.

Well put SweetG! ;)

I celebrated 2 years post taper Feb 19. I consider myself 85-90% healed most days. I decided to continue posting mostly for the companionship but also to continue to give comfort to those still tapering and/or struggling.

So glad that good news like this is inspiring other buddies as well!

I'm soooooooo glad to hear you're improving, sweet g!

Dare I say at almost 9 months my sleep is improving as well!  I also still can't fall asleep without anything, but the dose of trazodone I need is now minuscule compared to what I was at before.

Great for you sweet G. Awesome news!

Inching my way towards the 9 month mark, I'm also noticing improvements in sleep among other things.  Now-a-days I fall asleep quicker, I usually stay asleep, and I'm starting to wake up with less fatigue. Hopefully this continues for you, and all of us!

Hi SweetG!

So glad to hear that you slept straight through! :yippee: I've had nights like that too. My only regret is that when I wake up, I sure need the restroom!

Hollyms, I am on low doses of remeron and that seems to help with my sleep. Trazadone was one that I tried, but the side effects didn't work well with me. I've heard that remeron and trazodone are equally sedating.

Also congradts to Sam! As one who had insomnia issues post taper, I know the rewards of good nights sleeps especially when they return.
