will the symptom to be less as i am cutting down my dose?

Hello joychencarl,

I saw your questions and put together some information that may be helpful. Breathing and lung problems are well documented symptoms of withdrawal. The best thing we can do for ourselves regarding any symptom is to remain as calm as possible. Go to the doctor if you are concerned. And slow your taper as necessary to help the symptoms be as manageable as possible. I am the type of person who seeks to know what is happening and why, it brings comfort to me. I hope it does the same for you.

"The Ashton Manual" by Heather Ashton, 2002

BENZODIAZEPINE WITHDRAWAL SYMPTOMS:

INDIVIDUAL SYMPTOMS, THEIR CAUSES AND HOW TO DEAL WITH THEM

Heart and lungs. “Palpitations, pounding heart, rapid pulse, flushing, sweating, and breathlessness are usual accompaniments of panic attacks, but may occur without panics. They do not signify heart or lung disease but are simply the expression of an overactive autonomic nervous system. Slow deep breathing and relaxation, as described under panic attacks, can do much to control these symptoms. Do not worry about them: they would be accepted as normal if you were running for a bus, and will do no more harm than if you really were!”

“The Accidental Addict” by Di Porritt & Di Russell, 2006

Breathing and Lungs

“Breathing difficulties are very common in withdrawal. People feel that they have to gasp for air, as if the oxygen has somehow run out. They sigh continually in the effort to get more air in their lungs. It is as though the breathing mechanism has been disrupted.”

I hope this is helpful,

thank you for your answer, summer.  Now i feel better.  My doctor told me ativan should not give me so much trouble, and it was all my anxiety.  i know it has to do with ativan.

Not sure why, my doctor told me to reduce 33% of ativan in one week, so .75 mg atvian will be completely tappered off in three weeks.  After I found BB, I know I am not doing what he told me to do.

Hello joychencarl,

I'm so happy to hear the information was helpful and made you feel better! I have found that many doctors do not know about benzo withdrawal symptoms. I've also found that they do not know and are not taught how to help us taper. There are some who do know. This is one of my favorite books on how to taper from psych meds. He is a psychiatrist. If you are interested, this may be worth reading. "Your Drug May Be Your Problem, How and Why to Stop Taking Psychiatric Medications" 2007 fully revised and updated edition, by Peter Breggin, M.D. (a Psychiatrist) .

I'm so happy you found BB to know how to taper slowly from Ativan. I think you're doing great. I'm so proud of you for researching and finding your way to become benzo free.

Hi, When I was on Ativan I had severe chest pains and difficulties breathing for the entire 4 years I was on it.  I could not sleep on my side or back as I felt my lungs were caving in.  It seem to get worse at first but then after my 3 week taper (which was way to fast my doctor did not know what she was doing) it went away. I never had breathing or chest pains again.

i am experiencing the same.  My chest pain woke me up in the middle of the night.  I thought I was going to have a heart attack.  How did you do to ease the pain?  Also, I felt "air hunger" from time to time.  It is scary too.
