I went to see my new hollistic psychiatrist today. First visit n we spoke about benzodiazepines withdrawal but in the meantime she wants to start me on magnesium and vitamin d vitamins. I was a little nervous seeing now a days I'm scared of anything else going in my system. Has anyone else has taken this through tapering n withdrawal? She says it would help me with the headaches and also some of my body aches. Any suggestions but not scary please???

I am tapering from lorazepam since Sept 2019.  Hopefully done late spring or early summer.  I take magnesium citrate 400 mg and Vitamin D.  I have read that magnesium helps with muscle relaxation and sleep.  I really feel like it helps my sleep.  Vitamin D is good for people who don't get a lot of sun in winter, I used to just take it in winter, but now I take it all year, and my dr thinks it's good.

In any case, I don't think either of them can hurt, so whether it is effective or just psychological comfort, it's good either way.

Has it made withdrawal symptoms worse or better? Or no change at all? Just a little concerned. And the way I've been bedridden through this nightmare i barely get sun. So i guess it couldn't hurt just don't want to feel worse.

No, it doesn't seem to affect the withdrawal symptoms except I feel it helps me sleep.  I had developed a real sleep phobia over the 2 years+ that I had IBS.  Even if I went near my bed, I got bad feelings, and I used to dread evening.  I already had some dependency on the Ativan at that point, but I didn't realize it, I realize it now.  Then last spring my doctor said just be proactive and take your half mg Ativan at bedtime.  Which I did all last summer, and it did resolve the sleep phobia.  So I decided I didn't need it any more.  Then I got a shock to find I was dependent, and had to educate myself about tapering!  But I was so worried about the sleep problems coming back, so that's why I started the magnesium.  My sleep is pretty good, whether it is due to the magnesium I don't know, but if it works, why change it.

While I was sick I used to wake up with adrenalin rushing, from horrible nightmares, and then get nausea and diarrhea episodes.  Then I would take half an Ativan.  I had many awful nights.  That is why the doctor suggested taking the Ativan at bedtime, rather than waiting until I woke up feeling awful.  He said I shouldn't worry about .5 mg, he said that was a "tapering dose."  NOT.  But it's OK, I  am over halfway off it now, and my sleep is still pretty good.  And if I wake up, oh well, people don't die of insomnia.

But if you are bedridden that is hard.  If you could get any exercise, walking at all, that might be helpful to your body over time.  Or even now that we are having spring (at least where I live) maybe you could sit out in the sun on a nice day.

My naturopath suggested D , magnesium, among others things.  It has def helped and not hurt me.  I live in northern Canada.  So I get very little sun.  Magnesium helps with body aches and sleep.  I use a liquid topical magnesium, too.  I rub it on the achy places and it’s better than any Tylenol.  Magnesium can make you need the bathroom, so keep your dose lower until you get used to it.  But, it’s not a problem really.  They help heal your nervous system.

Hi Letty73!

I am tapring Clonazepam since Dec 2019, and taking Magnesium Citrate 260mg and Vit D 100.000 UI every two months  before taper.

The magnesium helps me to sleep better, and as I know, helps to absorb minerals and vit D. I take vit D prescribed, because a blood test showed that I had low vit D level (20). Now I am at 31 level.

The reaction of vit D in me is the 3rd or 4th following day scaly skin appears only in the bottom of my face, two days later then disappears. As I have readed, the excess of magnesium only causes more defecation and maybe diarrea but it is a good suplement (or hormone Im not shure).

IMO I would do a blood test of vit D level. It mostly comes from direct sun exposition and in a lower amount from food.
