Help planning my 2mg Klonopin taper

Recommended Posts

I've been on ~2mg Klonopin for three years now (2017-present). I've recently been prescribed Gabapentin 3x a day, as well as 60mg Latuda for depression. I'm not sure yet if the Latuda has been helping with anything but the Gabapentin has been helping remarkably with the anxiety and central nervous system agitation that I have that builds throughout the day and hits me like clockwork at certain times of day. I know many people argue not to add other meds into the mix but I'm going to continue them. I started my Klonopin taper on February 10-- that day I went from 2.25mg Klonopin to 2mg. I've been able to tolerate any symptoms from tapering so far. I am seeking help to plan the rest of my taper using the direct taper method. I think I'll be able to continue to get my pills in .25mg tablet form. And I have a pill cutter so I can halve and even quarter the .25mg pills as needed. What are the general guidelines for direct tapering? I read in one place to cut the dose by no more than 10% every 7-14 days, and I read in another place to cut the dose by no more than 10% every 2-3 weeks. Is there a general consensus on how to go about it? I know that one important thing is to listen closely to your body, and plan accordingly. But how should I draft an overall plan? I'm thinking 10% every 2-3 weeks, any advice or resources to share? Thanks.

Hi timeitstime,

I'm a little confused, you said you've been on 2 mgs for three years, but your first cut to your dose was from 2.25 to 2 mgs, did you go up in order to start your taper?

As for your taper, it should be a living thing, it needs to adapt to your lifestyle, your symptoms and your obligations, so yes, it's good to have a plan, but also good to be flexible.  We like to throw numbers out to give people a general overview of how a taper should look but that's all they are is numbers.  When it comes to your taper, listening to your body is absolutely key to this process.

I didn't taper but I hear with Klonopin you can expect symptoms from a reduction to appear as few as two days to 3 weeks after, so pay close attention to what you're feeling.  When you feel somewhat stable, then you can make the decision to reduce again.  You can hold longer than 7-14 days or 2-3 weeks or somewhere in between, its all up to you and how you're handling it.  The reason for a taper is to remain functional so whatever your taper looks like it needs to be with this goal in mind.

Keep asking questions, we want you to be comfortable with this process.

Why not go on a daily tapering plan where just a bit is dropped each day instead of holding at the same amount for a while and then going down and repeating a hold, etc. Check this out.
