Not a dog suffering from withdrawal. You know.

I really want to do it. I think I could care for him right. I know it would be great for me and I’ve wanted one forever. Now that I’m not working I’d actually have the time to really care for one.

However I’m cautious and anxious of course. Thoughts?

Dogs create more responsibility, financially and in caring for them, you'll be dealing with issues you may not be familiar with, how will you handle them?

Do you know people with pets who can give you advice?

Have you had a pet before?

Do you have a veterinarian picked out yet, do you have the financial resources to handle the unexpected bills which always seem to come up?

If you get a dog which requires grooming, are you prepared to either do it yourself or have it professionally done so the dog won't become uncomfortable?

Can you feel emotions right now, when I was in withdrawal, I had a hard time heaping the usual amount of love on my critters, I remember apologizing to them when I wasn't capable of showing it.

Are you able to go outside, can you take your dog out for walks?

If the dog requires training, can you be around people and other dogs in order to get it?

If or when you go back to work, what will you do with your dog when you're gone?

Do you have family support who can care for the dog if you have to go somewhere or you need a break?

Are you willing to put up with fur, vomit, accidents, chewing, drooling and the hundred of other trademarks of owning a pet?

All of these questions I've asked are necessary to ask yourself before getting a pet, but not just for people in withdrawal, everyone should think before getting a pet.  No pet deserves to go to a home and returned because it didn't work out, this is a lifetime decision you're making so I hope you'll consider it wisely.

Given everything I've asked, I love my animals and can't imagine life without them, so I hope you can answer yes to all of these questions, so you can know what I feel.
