Starting to taper, needing support

Hello, I’m a 46 year old female and have been on lorazepam/Ativan  for about 17 years. I found BenzoBuddies when I googled “tapering off Ativan.”  I’ve been trying to taper off of the medication because I know my doctor is going to start the process very soon (due to new regulations taking effect with my insurance company.) I have severe anxiety over this and I’m scared. I also have GAD and have tried every medication to help with it with only Ativan bringing relief. I’m currently on 2.5 mg every night before bed and just tapering by 1/4 of a tablet makes me absolutely miserable. I can’t live with anxiety and I need support desperately, which is why I’m here.

Hello Daisy12,

Welcome to Benzo Buddies! I'm sorry you find yourself in a position to taper off a medication that appears to be helping you.  I do believe we are going to see more and more attention given to long term prescribing of benzos. For some people there are effects that can happen with extended use such as cognitive decline, memory issues and of course the possibility of tolerance which can bring on a plethora of symptoms.

Try not to be frightened. With a sensible slow taper plan you'll be able to do this.  We can provide good information as well as support to you through the process.

Your plan of taking off 1/4 of a tablet is not the best way to reduce your benzo, I know this from experience myself. It's important to taper slowly so your body has a chance to adjust to the dose changes. Normally, a reduction of no more than 5-10% every 10-14 days is suggested. There is a lot of good information on the Planning Your Withdrawal Board. I'll give you a link and you can post questions.

I'll also give you a link to the Ashton Manual. It is a good resource about benzos, tapering and withdrawal. The manual was written by Dr. Heather Ashton, an expert in the field.

Many people have to deal with anxiety, you are not alone. I've known some members who once off benzos and healed have found their anxiety to be less. Others have found methods such as CBT, meditation, breathing techniques and yoga have been helpful. I'll give you a link to the Anxiety Board as well.

Do some reading and ask questions, you'll find a plan that works best for you. It's good to know you are not alone in this process, we understand what you are going through. Let us know how we can help.
