I'm scared all the freaking time. something like clicking the mouse (500x a day at work) startles me. It's hard to watch TV because any sudden flash on the screen bothers me. paper towel dispensers are a problem. I'm not scared of them but they seem to startle my CNS. Its basically chronic butterflys and jumping out of skin at this point. I can deal with the pain and most other symptoms until they disappear but this easily startled stuff needs to go.

I have it with the look, sound and feel of the whole of material reality.

I am literally phobic of reality.

Can I ask if you have it from touching the mouse, paper towel etc as well as the ‘thought’, sound, sight of these things.

Like everything feels it is sort of a hologram of itself that could explode apart.

touch is a big one for me. touching paper towels feel like I spent an hour scrubbing my hands with sandpaper.

Different for me. It is like they are an hallucination and can’t feel the ‘reality’ of anything properly which causes terror of touching g anything.

Same with feel of food in my mouth - al, terrifying g and repulsive because tactile sensation through whole body including g mouth has gone very wrong.

I can relate to this, and I think it is the symptom of a very tired mind from the stress of WD paired with our impaired GABA systems which would usually keep us grounded and calm.  I believe in time it will resolve, but we have to let that time pass.  In the meantime, try not to dwell on it and try to shift your focus when you notice it happening.

Cheers,

All our senses are on fight-or-flight for awhile. If someone was in the room with me and coughed, I jumped out of my skin.

Lights, especially fluorescent, drove me nuts.

I took a photography class at the end of my taper and beginning of recovery.  I not only didn’t have the cognitive ability to learn a single thing, the teacher did a lot of visual presentations which involved lights on/lights off for the duration of the class.  It was torture.

I avoided showering or changing clothes because my skin hated to be touched.  Thank goodness that passed.

This will settle down as your nervous system settles down. Until then just know it’s normal.  Unfortunate, annoying, distressing...but normal.

I can feel quite calm and forget about the touch thing and then reach out and pick something g up and instantly the non-feel of it in my hand causes terror. Same with touching my own body or my partner’s hand.

My startle response has been off the wall.  The simple dropping of a teaspoon and I jump out of my skin.  The slightest unexpected sound does it to me every time.  A cough, as Challis says.  Anything!

I agree with Challis.  Our flight or fight is still primed and is going to take time to settle.

It is slowly, slowly, showing improvement.  Very early on I screamed at a bus for applying hydraulic brakes.  Very embarrassing.  People looked at me on the bus shelter and had to apologise.  But I couldn't help it, it shattered every nerve ending in my body.

I can now hear the hydraulic brakes and unexpected sounds without totally freaking out.  I'll be 12 months out, March 1st.  This has been so hard.

Improving.

same here. I'm usually a nice person but I was in a waiting room the other day and a guy kept messing around with his jacket. Took this man 5 minutes to get it off and to me and sounding like nails on a chalk board, I made a frustrated heavy breathe and had to go out in the hallway for a bit
