Hey ladies and gents, my name is Szeth or Chris if you prefer my real name haha. I was a very bad alcoholic until September last year and quit (had many withdrawals which has probably added to what im about to say) I took Diazpam and Xanax throughout the month of December to help me over that period then day after that stopped I had pretty much all the symptoms of a moderate to bad withdrawal. Flu feeling, body aches, head pressure, muscle pains, tinnitus in my left ear, nausea, bloating, heart palpitations. Im a month off and a lot has eased but im still getting heart palpitations, body aches and head pains so im quite anxious and scared. Im just terrified of these heart palpitations, my heart seems to thump quite hard when I'm at rest or sitting down I can feel it thumping away. When im distracted like playing games I don't notice it, it's weird. Went to my doctor and my BP was actually down from 135/90 to 122/84. Im exercising more and eating well but even food seems to get my heart bumping. Normal EKG and waiting for a 24 one, and heart rate normal, just the pounding feeling sometimes. This and head pains and body aches are my remaining symptoms. Im just looking for some reassurance that this is withdrawal and some people to relate to because the anxiety is destroying me. Cheers for reading everyone. Oh and I know a month ain't a long time but I've been told recovering alcoholics like myself will get worse withdrawals, and it seems damn right because I could barely walk the first two weeks.

Hello Szeth,

Welcome to Benzo Buddies and congratulations on being both alcohol and benzo free.

I don't really think that alcoholics have a harder withdrawal then others, I haven't seen anything that points to that. In fact, I know of many people who never drank but still had a challenging withdrawal. The fact is, for a certain subset of individuals, withdrawal can be the most difficult thing they've ever done.

Yes, one month off is very early in terms of recovery. You are likely still in what is considered the acute phase of withdrawal where the symptoms can be the strongest.

I'm glad you got checked out by a doctor, it's always a good thing to rule out any possible underlying issues. I did this myself.

Heart palps and the feeling of a pounding heart is very common during withdrawal.  Health anxiety is another common withdrawal symptom. The fact that you feel some easing of the symptoms is a very good sign of healing.

I think you'll find others who share the same symptoms you are experiencing. I'll give you a link to the Post Withdrawal Recovery Board where you can post and receive feedback from others.  It really helps to know you are not alone.

Exercising and eating healthy is good, you are doing the right things.  We'll be happy to offer support to you as you heal. Please ask questions, we're here to help.
