Cognative Issues: no short term memory - struggling with simple tasks. Help.

3 mo off all meds and cognative struggle is getting worse not better. I'm stuggling to understand and follow conversations, often misunderstanding the context of simple things. Seriously, no short term memory! Really, it's gone. Help... I went to a prayer service tonight. I dont remember most of what we prayed about, I dropped things, I don't feel a part of reality (derealization)?

Ive only read about people having these issues while they were ON the benzos. Once off they got their mind back, why not me?

Sunny, what you described is completely normal when someone goes off benzos, either by taper or CT. Your brain is trying to heal itself, causing your memory and cognitive problems.

DP/DR often occur when someone stops taking drugs that work on the brain, like benzos and ADs. I have not heard of anyone having those things while on benzos, but you just never know.

Okay. what you described sounds totally normal to me. you took a strong benzo for too long, and then got off of it. benzo wd can cause an amazing array of weird symptoms, but cog fog and memory are classic wd symptoms.

I read your Signature, and want to point out that the term "floxxed" refers to people who, when on a benzo, were given a certain type of antibiotic, the flouroquinolones. Levaquin is one of them. The contrast you get in an MRI does NOT do this. Those types of antibiotics can throw someone into abrupt withdrawal. That happened to me about 3 times when I was in the hospital. Or at least, that is how I understand this. And I sure don't know everything....no one does!

East, thank you for your help. I need to read and soak in your wisdom and kindness.

I wasn't on benzos when I was floxed but I understand what you mean.

Its just super hard for me to accept that this is normal and that I'll heal. I mean I'm really impaired. I have days I don't drive becuase I'm too mentally off. I used to love to drive. I drove this morning to the Dr.  & I was ok bit for whatever reason as the day went on I just got dumber. Even forgot how-to use FB!

I prayed for all of us at the prayer service. I do know that.

Sunny, I completely relate to what you are going through and this tough experience can put one in a panic. From being poly drugged, it can have really weird effects on the brain and nervous system  when tapering or doing CT, which play out in all sorts of physical, mental  & emotional symptoms. I have serious derealization, with a multitude of SX's, and dont know which are the worst as have so many, but DR, loss of memory, cause a lot spikes to my anxiety,  which I have to just accept and keep "riding out" while giving my brain and nervous system a chance to heal. From what I read from members of this community, it just takes time and everyone is different, as to how long it takes, but we do heal.

This is what  BB is here for, to help each other get through these frightening and challenging side effects.

I sincerely wish you a speedy recovery from this.

the whole caveat of benzo withdrawal is what happens to people after they get off the meds. i haven't encountered one person on here who got their mind back after they got off. you are not an exception. a very normal unfolding. it gets worse before it gets better

You haven't encountered even 1 person who got their mind back? OmG.... How does anyone function then after all this?

We're all just doomed. :(

And if we don't get our mind back then what exactly gets better after its been worse?

Thank you. I pray for healing but it's not looking good for feeling good.

I feel worse not better.

you're psyching yourself what with speculating you will not get better. and that's normal in withdrawals. but you will.

You think so?

Did you see above the post that says they never met anyone that got their mind back after all this?

I dont recall anyone reporting that they got their intellect back either. Its terrifying.

Have you noticed improvements in your thinking and cognative issues or do you not have those SX per say?

Thank you for chatting with me... I'm in a dark place and have been for months but its getting darker even.

Sunny day,

I see you posting around the forum that someone told you no one gets their mind back, is this the post you are referring to? I've been going back through your posts trying to find it.

My goodness, you need to stop feeding your fear, you will get yours back.  I'm here and there are many people still here who are doing just fine and have returned to who they were before the drug withdrawal.

Please try to distract yourself from this type of thinking, you're working yourself up with worst case scenarios, a typical bi-product of benzo withdrawal, don't let it do this to you.

Yes its somewhere back on this post. I'm not good at navigating this site. I'm not mad at the person for posting that cuz if that's the case then it is what it is.

I'm grateful to hear you have your mind back.

I legit don't know how to believe this can get better when I only feel worse and suffer more, you know what I mean?

Thank you for replying to me. Means a lot.

Sorry Sunny day, I meant to quote this post in my reply to you.  Please read the success stories, it was the only way I got through this, although to be honest with you, I didn't believe they were written by real people because I felt hopeless like you do.

I know this is hard, I was where you are now but I got better.

Yes, that's the post.

I'll read more success stories.

Thank you again

I read the above messages, I believe they meant that no one recovers immediately after their last dose.

The cognitive impairment has been my worst symptom since day one. I don’t want to scare you but I’m not gonna sugar coat it either. Severe cognitive damage is one of the worst symptoms that you can get. Nearly everyone gets some sort of brain fog, but if you’re like me you’re experiencing something far worse than that. It feels like the front of your brain isn’t working, right?

Here’s the scary part, I’m currently 19 months off and I’m still experiencing the cognitive damage. There is some good news though. My memory has improved tremendously. The only memory problems that I am having are a byproduct of the cognitive damage. Because my frontal lobe isn’t working properly I can’t form memories correctly due to the disconnection. All of my other symptoms have melted away minus the anxiety (naturally).

Im glad you're feeling better.

Im sorry its taken so long for you to feel better.

Are you now able to read and enjoy a good book, movie or music?

Can you comfortable participate in a conversation?

I wish I could say yes. I can watch movies and play videogames, but reading, not a chance. I can identify the words on the page but as I read them it’s in and out. I can’t retain information.

Thank you for replying. I'm glad you can do & enjoy more. Sorry that reading isnt working for you. I cant imagine living the rest of my life without reading. I love books. I miss so much about the real me. I haven't met anyone yet that had cog issues and started reading again.

Thank you so much for the clarification. I'm hypersensitive.. I never used to be this way but every detail matters to me now and I'm so scared.
