I have been on benzos (Xanax) for over 13 years. My family doctor had prescribed a large dose of 4mg per day to start with as he was not familiar nor was I with this medication. The pharmacist at the time question the high dose and he faxed my family doctor to confirm which he did before he issued the prescription. I soon found myself totally dependent and not functional but at same time relieved. By the 6 month I would run out of meds by the 20 day of my 30 day prescription. The pharmacist could not legally renew my prescription at 20 days and would fax my family doctor for the shortfall which he would send over to pharmacist. After 8  years and some very horrible withdrawals I seek the help of a shrink who explained they were unacceptable doses that he never prescribed in his career. He initially kept the dose the same but renewals were changed to ever 7 days so I could not unintentionally abuse it. He started tapered me off at 3 mg but it was to drastic and finally he settled at tapering at .25mg per 3 months and sending me to a detox center. Presently I am down to 2.75 grams but all hell breaks lose if I am a few hours late picking up my meds or if I took to many during the week when I anxiety is peaking. In a nutshell its hell on Friday's renewal day and I usually need more on Friday than prescribed. Bottom line I desperately want my life back n get off.

Hi  Jodak77

We are glad you found us.  I am sorry you are having a tough time, ask your doctor if he will support a slower taper, the nature of benzos is that they need to be tapered off slowly.  Detox places tend to take you off too quick.  A gradual taper of 5-10% every 10-14 days is generally recommended. Many need to taper off much slower than this, whatever feels comfortable. The aim is to keep symptoms manageable.

I am going to leave a link to the Ashton Manual, a great source of information about these types of medications and how to withdraw.  The manual contains taper and withdrawal info and explains how benzos affect the body.

Withdrawal can be quite a tough time, being amongst people who understand can make it a little easier.  We have a great bunch of people here, our members have been through all aspects of benzodiazepine use and withdrawal, and will share their experiences with you.

Here are a couple links to information on tapering and also withdrawal support while tapering.
