My name is Todd and I’ve decided to join this group because I’m in the process of tapering off of Klonopin. It’s funny how these things work. About a year ago I decided to go see a psychiatrist in my area who is known for helping folks taper safely off of benzos. A few months ago, I finally decided to take the plunge and start the process. Now I’ve gotten up the nerve to join this group. What do these things (and many more) have in common? They were all steps I needed to take to accept that Klonopin is no longer a safe and viable option for me and it’s time to do something about it.

When registering my account, I found I had created one in 2013 – and while the details are hazy – I know now I wasn’t prepared at the time.

Backing up a bit … I’m thirty one years old and have been taking Klonopin in varying doses since I was eighteen years old. If I knew then what I know now I wouldn’t have accepted the doc’s prescription. Just looking at the last ten years of my life or so, I can report that I’ve defeated cancer, but lost my left hand in the process, graduated college, began a recovery program (sober/clean since 2015 … hey, that rhymes!), and worked as a social media manager for a Fortune 500 company for just under 7 years.

I also struggle with anxiety and depression. The very illnesses that prompted me to see a doctor when I was 18 have now been exacerbated by the drug I was given.

I know now it’s time to stop. I’m very blessed to be in a position to have found a doctor supportive of a taper (after years of being told “it’ll never happen”), and blessed to have found out about this forum, as well. I'm currently taking 0.5 mg in the morning and 0.125 mg at night. I've been holding for about six weeks between dose changes. I've seen more anxiety pop up since I've cut down to 0.125 mg at night.

Hi ClosetCinephile  and Welcome to Benzobuddies

I am so glad you have joined our community, you have taken the right steps, in your decision to safely taper off Klonopin.  You have been through so much in your life.  What an inspiration you are, I am sorry cancer took your hand, but you beat it!!  you have a great attitude.  Congratulations on graduating college.  Benzos need to be tapered slowly. We can help you with support and taper/withdrawal information.

In general it’s advised to cut your daily dose by between 5% and 10% every 10 - 14 days.  This is depending on how you feel.  If symptoms get too much then you might decide to cut less,  the goal is to remain as functional as possible whilst moving forwards.

Check out the Ashton Manual, It’s great for understanding the effect benzodiazepines have on our body.  It also provides tapering and withdrawal information.  You will find some valuable support and info on the forum.  Please feel free to browse the boards and post questions to any of the dedicated threads.

You might wish to post to the this support group,

Klonopin Klub  members will be happy to share their experience and offer advice.

I'll leave you a few links:
