Hi, I'll try to keep this short and concise:

I was on Clonazepam for 15 years, currently 6 months Benzo free!

During my taper and since finishing, I abstained completely from alcohol.

I had a beer the other day and had a real negative reaction to the alcohol, almost instantly.

Headache, dizzy, slight nausea - not what one expects from immediate Alcohol intake.

I generally felt odd especially after two more beers - I was drunk but it felt very different from when I took my prescribed Klonopin.

I used to drink when on meds and always had a fine time, no blackouts, no real issues - except for nasty hangovers. Not abusing alcohol - social drinker.

I assume this is from sensitivity to my damaged brain - and that time will heal it.

Has anyone has a similar experience, how was it for you and did it pass?

Are there any tips or tricks to getting over this issue faster?

I often read about gabs supplements and others wondering if they can help?

I also noted my hangover was less severe - do benzos make Hangovers worse?

I realize this is not super important and will most likely get eye rolls  ::) - but its legitimate!

Hi,

Just wanted to start the same sort of topic! So thank you for sharing your story.

Having the same issue. I am off benzo's for 3 months, and this week I went out and had like 7 beers. Everything okay that evening, finally felt good going out again. Even reacted positive to a few beers (before I had the same issues like you, felt really tired after one beer. Bit dizzy, not feeling well).

However, the last few days I went back to all sorts of issues, the same like the worst part of the benzo withdrawal. Can barely walk, feeling tired, dizzy, stomach problems, can't focus, only want to lay on the couch.

Seems like a good lesson the stay off the alcohol for a while longer!

Are there any people that can maybe give some success stories, regarding when it was possible for them to being able to drink a beer again?

Thanks in advance!

Keep up the good work @ The Wooden Duck, hope you are reaching the point of all getting back to normal again!!

Take care.

“Alcohol and Healing Brain?”

After breaking your leg would you run a marathon in your cast?  How about the day after your cast came off?

What you don’t understand is that benzos downregulated your receptors.  Alcohol also downregulates your receptors. They call booze “benzos in a bottle” for a reason.  Downregulation is why you feel the way you do right now.  Why would you ever drink during this?  Your body is trying to UPregulate your receptors to get you out of this state and you are DOWNregulating your receptors.

Who do you think is gonna win this battle?  You are what you put in your mouth.

I had a really bad setback at 13 months off due to alcohol. I didn’t even drink enough to get drunk. It’s been three months since I made that mistake, and I’m still not back to where I was before it. Stay away from alcohol for now. It’s seriously not worth it.

Interesting. I remember reading somewhere... that Valium was touted as "Alcohol in a pill."

I had some beers on 3-4 different occasions at 3 months out as it seemed things were progressing and I just wanted to be normal.  That was about three months ago.  I can’t say it precipitated a long wave a few weeks later but it may have.  Either way, it wasn’t worth it.

Don’t feel bad original poster.  I know the feeling all too well of wishing to be able to cut loose and have some fun.
