CatGuy trying to taper

Recommended Posts

Was on Xanax for about 5 months.  Switched to Klonapin and have been comfortable at 0.5 mg per day for a week.  I'm looking to taper down to zero.  How quickly can this be done?  My supply is limited.  Looking for positive suggestions, or pointers to local in-person help.

Hello CatGuy, Welcome to BenzoBuddies!

I'm glad you made the switch to Klonopin, it has a longer half life than Xanax so it's a lot better to taper from.  I'm sorry to hear your supply is limited, is there any way your Dr would support a longer taper, it's so much better to go slow so your body can adjust to the changes.  If that's not possible, just let us know how many pills you have left and we can try to figure out a taper schedule that will hopefully keep you from experiencing withdrawal symptoms.  Check out the General Taper Plans board and post your questions there, I'm sure you'll get lots of help.

As for looking for in-person help, we ask members not to give out their personal information, it's so difficult to know who is who on the internet and some of our members are quite vulnerable in their present state.  I have seen threads on the forum where members have mentioned support groups and benzo wise Dr's, I'll try to find those for you.

Again, welcome.

I have only 4 pills left 0.5 mg each, enough to get me to my next appointment on Tuesday.  Then they want to drop me from 0.5 to 0.25 mg for maybe 4 days and then to zero.  Is such a schedule possible to achieve?  I'm stuck with this unless I can find another source.

Hi CatGuy,

Did you experience any unpleasant symptoms when you crossed over from Xanax to Klonopin, was it difficult to find a comfortable dose?  The reason I'm asking is because some people can withdraw from benzo's without horrible side effects, of course you won't find any of them here, but there are those who don't have a problem.  It's possible you won't have any issues at all, this is why there is such a discrepancy between medical professionals in how to instruct their patients on tapering.  We just don't know who will suffer and who won't until it slams you to the ground.

Do you think your Dr would be open to taking a look at the The Ashton Manual, it's a comprehensive look at benzo withdrawal with recommendations for tapering slowly and safely.
