Hi everyone. Some of you may remember me from a little over a year ago. I had to get away from the group and just go out and force myself to live my life and it's helped so much. I'm 14 months out from a forced cold turkey situation and I'm about 90% healed! I never thought I would feel this good again.

My question is however, I'm having a hysterectomy in a week. They use versed and propofol. In scared it will throw me back into withdrawal. Does anyone have experience with this? Should I go for it and risk it or look for some sort of alternative for anesthesia?  I've come such a long way since this all started and I just know that I couldn't handle anything that resembles acute cold turkey withdrawal again . Totally freaked please help.

Hello and congratulations on feeling so well!!!

I've had several surgeries over the past 10 years. ( bad shoulder, failed first surgery, Thoracic Outlet Syndrome)  Dr. Ashton states that a one off use of benzos for a medical procedure is not a problem and I've seen that be the case with other members.

I personally chose not to have a pre-op benzo, versed.  This is given to relax the patient but since I've been down this road so many times I didn't feel like I needed it, and I certainly didn't want it.  The doctors respected my wishes, benzos are listed as an allergy on my electronic chart.

Propofol is not a benzo. I had this anesthesia for all of my surgeries and had no problems with it.

Try not to worry and don't be afraid to speak to the anesthesiologist.  It is your body and your choic

Good luck!!

I really think or hope that the state in which you are in will help you get through this traumatic experience... surgery that is necessary and can't be avoided is tough but the sedation and antibiotics after can make it even more difficult to rebound back.  Good to use caution and get PLENTY of rest prior to the operation.  Again, having a calm (even meditate prior) CNS going INTO the surgery should help prevent you from going back into Acute withdrawals AFTER.  Eat well and LOTS of protein.

I have had several fairly minor surgeries since going CT off benzos. I was given a benzo to relax me pre op and given benzos during anesthesia. I was scared to do this, but decided to chance it. Did NOT affect me at all. I had NO weird sudden "cravings" for benzos post op, every time. What I found was that minor taking benzos for procedures did not hurt me at all.
