The past few weeks my waves have been getting much worse.  The rage I have is becoming hard to control.  Well, it is out of control.  And I am afraid of my own actions.  I have started to throw things (ice packs, books, water bottles) and it is like a reflex.  I notice it after it happens.  Anyone else ever have to deal with something like this?  Any suggestions on how to get control of rage and impulses?

Hi Runner3,

Sorry you are having to deal with this.

I recently broke a computer trackpad because I was in a fit of rage. The only thing I've found that helps my anger is to exercise and burn off some of that negative energy. Even if you can just get down and do a couple pushups, I've found that helps.

Try it out!

I've been dealing with crippling anger too and I'm scared of it. I haven't lashed out or done anything to anyone or anything, but it's scary feeling you might not be able to control it.

What have you done about it? Trying to learn some new methods here.

No but I'm scared of my anger too. I know sugar makes me worse and bad food. I'm trying to eat no sugar now for a long time and healthy whole foods.

Heavy bag. Not kidding.

I have a friend that recommended exactly that.

Yeah it helps get the anger out. My therapist kept telling me to get one and so I finally did. Also, get insurance in your phone and a really tough case. Lol.

Pacing or walking seems to be the only thing that helps me at all. I have to be moving at all times, it seems.

I may get a punching bag for Christmas this year. It could be a gift I ask for.

For me, it's hard. I think about my daughter and feel angry, even when I'm not with her. And I can barely connect with her when I am with her and feel scared about being angry. I might have more going on then just benzo withdrawal, but I have been going to a  therapist and it's not helping. I get massage and it's not helping. The entire massage last time I was thinking about my daughter and my wife and feeling uncomfortable and angry. I'm thinking that I may have delayed postpartum depression/OCD in men.

boomboxboy21 Are you angry constantly? I feel disconnected from the world and feel emotionally numb towards my loved ones pretty much constantly. I don't feel constantly angry though but when it comes on its like overwhelming strong rage. I know its benzo rage. I have already broken a phone. Its worse if I'm worn out or if I eat bad food.

Being anxious with my daughter is basically all the time, even thinking about her when I'm not with her. I'm never able to enjoy myself with her and basically not at all when I'm at home. Then the anger is present most of the day too. Not all day at work but definitely all morning and I usually don't feel it before bed at home, but basically all the time, yes. I'm not really understanding what's going on all the time. I never thought it would be this way with my daughter.

I've not caused any real destruction, but have felt the urge.  Even against myself when I think about it.  Urge to smash things.

Walked past two women engaged in friendly conversation yesterday.  I became immediately angry with them, and in my mind told them to shut the f up.

I don't know whether the anger is a direct result of withdrawal, or sheer anger at having to endure this shit.

As we are our own physicians, and take our own counsel.  "Do no harm".  Don't want to be in the clink when the days of milk and honey finally arrive.  :)

It's OK to remove the last page of an Whodunnit though.  >:D.

Well, I got the heavy bag.  Thanks for the advice Jack37.  I have only had to hit the bag a few times so far.  The best thing about having it is knowing it is there and that I can go hit it if I want to.  Now when I have an impulse to punch the wall I just remember that I can go hit the bag instead.  It helps take the stress away from the rage.  It’s working so far.

Another thing that is helping me is meditating. I was hesitant to it for a while. It seems so stupid to me. But it really relaxes me. I use a version of it during the day. I am an ex smoker and I used to take cigarette breaks when I started getting irritable. Now, what I do is throughout the course of the day I stop every 20-30 minutes and I set a 1 minute timer on my phone. For just one minute I take no more than 6 breaths for the entire minute. I breath in for five seconds and out slow for five seconds. I do it six times. It’s much shorter than my cigarette breaks used to be and seems to have a very similar calming effect. If you don’t believe it give it a shot. It literally only takes a minute. 1 minute countdown timer and 6 long breaths in and out. When I meditate I only do like 3 minute guided ones off of youtube.

I used to resist this. I am an old school dude. To paint the picture I drive a  pickup, ride a Harley, work construction. Meditation seemed too sissy to me. Like yoga. Men don’t need any emotions but anger. Lol. I’m coming around slowly. Anyway meditating is helping alot. Don’t tell my buddies. Lol.

I won't tell them, I promise.

Meditation has a lot of solid science behind it. I did a seven day silent meditation retreat once, and I've never been so calm in all of my life. So nice to have that incessant chatter in your head go away for awhile. I use a great app on my phone:

A good timer and all kinds of guided meditations.

Soon you will be riding that Harley to your yoga class...  :D

Does the free version of insight timer app have a good number of quality meditations? Others I’ve tried are super limited until you pay.

I'm not on the computer I use to purchase apps, and I don't recall. But IT is free and I've done guided meditations on it. I think there is a lot on there also that you can pay for if you wish.

It's a pretty great app.
