Learning the hard way

As the subject states I’m learning the hard way of the dangers of benzodiazepines. After a loss our family doctor rx’d .5mg of Xanax as needed to me to help with anxiety and insomnia. I find that my anxiety has increased and have been reading more about this dangerous drug. I am looking for support to begin tapering this drug out of my life. I am fearful if it’s long term effects.

Hello DinahVIZ,

Welcome to Benzo Buddies! You are among many people who had to learn the hard way.  The good thing is that you'll find a lot of information here that will help you find a taper plan that works and reach your ultimate goal of being benzo free.

Benzos can work, that is, until they don't.  I can relate to your anxiety issues. I didn't really have anxiety until I was put on benzos, they sure did a good job of creating it.

Why don't you give us some additional information so we can address your situation. How long have you been taking xanax?

Generally, for those who have taken benzos for a period of time, a slow taper is recommended to help minimize withdrawal symptoms. A reduction of no more than 5-10% every 10-14 days is suggested. I'll give you a link to the General Taper Plans for additional information.

Why don't you also take a look at the Ashton Manual. It is an excellent resource about these types of drugs and how to withdraw. The manual was written by Dr. Heather Ashton, an expert in the field.

We'll be happy to support you and encourage you through the process.  Do some reading and let us know how we can help.

Thank you so much for the kindness and the information. I’ve been on it for only a couple months  I only take one a day. But I read some stuff online and on here and now I’m worried. I haven’t had any symptoms that I’m struggling with other than the increased anxiety but I worry if I try to stop I will.  I will take a look at the resources you’ve provided.
