This site has been helping me so much as this experience is so lonely. I keep saying I wish I could hang out with people dealing with this all day. On the Lisa Ling episode of This Is Life they show a real life meet up group for survivors. I have tried googling my city but can't find one. Does anyone know if theres a comprehensive list anywhere for this?

I'm trying to find this out also. I posted a few weeks ago, but was shut down by the mods for breaking the rules regarding PMing personal info. There are a few groups listed here:

We value the privacy and security of our members so it is our duty to protect them from possible nefarious people. Most are genuine, but because people are so fragile during withdrawal, we don't want them to be taken advantage of by someone whose motives are not sincere.

 

That is why we disallow personal information to be shared anywhere on the forum, including PM's.

I've made a good friendship with someone on BB. I'd like to meet people locally, but the mods take security over liberty. Such as it is...

Yep..Def. have a muzzle on us.  This forum has the platform to do so much more in people's lives.  Not sure how ya balance risk vs. benefit.  We are a vulnerable group of people....but I would like to make the decision now that I have stabilized a bit.  Not have it made for me.

 

Huge liability issues.  It probably would be a nightmare for admin to have to deal with waiver's or informed consent of dangers.  There's also the protection of our personal info.  It's tough to keep anything private these days.  During acute, I wasn't capable of understanding a waiver or implications.  I appreciated the anonymity.  Paranoia ran high.  But this was also a time when I really needed to connect with someone who understood.  I needed help.  More than a post.

Following. There was a benzo-wise psychiatrist in my location and I went to him a couple times when I first started thinking about getting off of the poison. He had a weekly support group. This was maybe 6 years ago. I tried contacting him to see if the group was still running, but his office is closed and he’s now working for the local hospital. I really hope he didn’t sell out because he’d had his own benzo experience and seemed to really get it. Anyway, I’m always looking for a local support group too. I think in-person support would be really helpful.

DBM I wish you could share the name of that doctor. Are you allowed to share the name of doctors on here? I did a simple google search for a medication I'm still on and it says to avoid such medications during benzo w/d. I'm having a hard time getting anyone to listen to me. I really need to find a doctor who understands and can tell me how bad it is that I'm still on this medication.

Well, I’m not sure how much good it would do, since he’s part of a hospital system now and has discontinued his private practice. Have you tried searching benzo-wise docs on BIC’a site?

I think what I need is real life ppl who have healed to tell me face to face and show me what they were like then, and where they are now. I need hope, not companionship. You guys all fit the role of comforting me in the sense that I'm not alone in this suffering. I don't need real life people who are in the same boAt as me.
