Ready to try to start weaning myself off xanax. (about 1 mg daily- over 20 years!)

Tried to cut back a slight bit and have had disturbed sleep and feel depression like I haven't felt in decades.

I am seeing doctor on Monday.

Think I will need to take something for depression while trying to cut back on xanax.

Also, the jittery feeling kicks in panic feelings.

How are you all handling this?

Thanks for your help

Hi Killanie, yes I ended up going on Remeron to help with withdrawal

Are you having tolerance withdrawal to the xanax? Does it still work the same?

If you are serious about coming off it do a long slow taper.  Don't take any other drugs.  Don't spend any time on here unless its for advice or support on tapering.

Just my advice

Killarney, I have been on ADs as long as the Benzos. My doctor bumped up my AD, and I truly believed it helped.

Yes, I'm talking 80 mg Prozac and 100 mg Seroquel when I wake up, 75 mg at 2 PM and 200 mg at night. It does help. Depression is a big problem with me and benzos, as well.

I was put on 40 mg of Prozac as well as a SSRI that specifically helps with sleep called Trazedone.  I don't think I would be doing as well as I am without both.  Yes I still have bad SX's, horrible at times, but I think I would be so much worse without these to quell the anxiety, depression and insomnia that were overwhelming me!  Whatever you decide to do, goodluck! ❤ BLL

I'm taking 20mg of Paxil, 100mg Seroquel XR and 150mg Wellbutrin XR, the help a lot, almost all of my symptoms are gone, I'm calm, don't have crazy anxiety, but I still get strange body sensations, rage sometimes, dp/dr, fatigue, I can't sleep without seroquel, tinnitus, hot flashes, muscle twiches, tension sometimes, numb brain, bad memory and concentration, strange feeling of my body like it isn't mine, but meds help me with mental symptoms a lot. You just need to find a right one.

Hey akul did you have DPDR before the benzos

Hi, I'm on 60 mg of Cymbalta. I think it has helped pull me out of a very depressed and anxious state. It's relative, of course, as benzos are still affecting me. Hoping to start reductions in diazepam soon.

Yes, I am, but I've been on both klonopin and antidepressants for years.  I'm actually tapering off the Viibryd, on the advice of my dr, along with the klonopin.

Yes but not that bad, it was because of anxiety, now is because of benzo.

I'm on 10mg Paxil and 75mg of Seroquel and it almost took away my depression and no anxiety at all, now I'm somehow stable on 9mg of Valium, will start tapering today. but still dealing with dp/dr that makes me nervous and anxious and numb brain and fatigue.

I've been on citalopram for years. First started in 2009, quit in 2010, then restarted in 2011. I was taking 40 mg for most of it, but I reduced to 20 mg about 3 years ago. It has worked wonders for me.

I started mirtazapine 4 years ago right after a cancer diagnosis. I ramped up pretty quickly to the max dose, 45 mg, which I'm still taking. It works very well. Is it still working? I don't know, but I am not depressed.

The xanax started 3 years ago (with the ambien), right after I finished chemo. Once you finish with cancer treatment you're all of a sudden just like, what now? While constantly worrying that every little ache, bump, whatever, is the cancer returning. Also, since I had lost a lot of weight, my thyroid dose was suddenly too high. That is not at all a pleasant feeling.

No I'm tapering the xanax. My taper is going OK. Except for when I thought I was getting near the end and tried to rush it. That didn't work. So I updosed and re-started my taper. Otherwise things are OK.

I'm on 50 mg Zoloft and 37.5 mg of Seroquel but have been on both of those meds, in varying doses, through the years.  I think the Zoloft may be working against me right now, causing my nervous system to be on high alert.  With that said, without it, I may be having huge sweaty panic attacks.  But I think it "ramps" me up.

Each person is different but personally, I wish I was not on either of those other meds right now.
