Are SSRI's Recommended in place of xanax?

I am hoping to start the withdrawal process off xanax (1 mg day - 25 years) Diagnosed panic disorder, anxiety and depression.

Doctor wants me on Lexapro or Celexa - is this normal? What have you all experienced?

I really don't want more meds if I can help it.

Had the best luck with celexa (citalopram)

Is it a replacement ? No way.

I suggest if you are preparing for a taper. Dont beging the taper until 2 to 3 weeks into beginning the SSRI.

Also. Tapering from xanax is actually kind of tough, see if you can switch to klonopin for the taper. I found it not too far off from xanax from the valium cross over many others are doing. DM me if you want to chat.

I am having great results with Citalopram.  It's one of the most tolerable SSRIs, according to my psychiatrist (who is handling my WD and meds).  She also told me I would not have to be on it forever.  I was on it for years, but I was actively drinking and taking narcotic pain meds.  So, I thought it wasn't working.  DUH. :idiot:  As I was tapering, when I got near the end of the taper from Diazepam, I started the Citalopram (20 mg). (about 3-4 weeks before I jumped).  Once I jumped, she lowered the dose to 10 mg and although I feel dreadful physically (burning, itching, pain, ear issues, etc., ad nauseum), I'm not depressed, have not gained any weight, I'm able to access my emotions (which some SSRIs limit), and I'm not feeling the overwhelming sense of impending doom on a daily basis.     The physical WD symptoms, I'm told, will eventually subside.  I'm just thankful that I'm feeling better emotionally.  I feel as though there might be a light at the end of this long, dark tunnel.

My hope is to someday be off all meds, but for now, 10 mg of Citalopram is alright by me.

Good luck!  :smitten:

I didn't have any luck with SSRIs, but have had some benefits from an SNRI (Cymbalta).
