Fast transition from Klonopin to Valium.

[md...]

Recommended Posts

Hi, was hoping to get some feedback. I was on klonopin for 3 months between .50 mg and .75 mg, before my dr transitioned to me over to Valium in which she dis to quickly, 1 week, from .50 mg Klonopin to 8 mg Valium. She fat tapered me and I have been hitting withdrawal symptoms and tolerance badly. Was the fast transition like c/t off of klonopin? She said they are the same family but research states other and I believe I'm paying for it now...

SHe also had me uodose 1 mg Vallium last week to see if it would help in which it only made things worse. I'm looking for a new Dr, but no one is experienced with Benzos.

Thanks -

Hi mdv42,

I probably don't quite know enough about this to respond, but my guess is the abrupt cessation from klonopin could definitely be causing your distress.  I know valium and klonopin are both benzodiazepines, and I know valium isn't as fast-acting as klonopin, and that it takes more mg to equal the effects of klonopin.  Is there anyway the dr. can put you back on the klonopin for a slower transition?

Answering your PM of this morning:

Hi Challis,

You responded to me question with a fast taper and I wanted to ask you, what were you on before and for how long before you fast tapered off. I current;y am on 6mg of V, but wondering if I could fast taper with Ativan the way you experienced?

I tapered 2mg of Xanax after about 8 years use.  No long-acting benzodiazepines, so all I can contribute is what I’ve read of others’ experiences.

You’d first need to do a crossover, then taper. But a rapid taper? I didn’t rapid taper (although I quit too soon and had to reinstate) and wouldn’t advocate a rapid taper.

Challis

P.S.  By ‘same family’ your doc probably meant they are both benzodiazepines. They are both also long-acting benzodiazepines.
