Second time - so scared

Hi! I’m so glad I found this forum because I don’t have anyone to talk to about this. About 15 months ago I became pregnant and had to stop taking the Ativan I was taking daily for about 2.5 years. Some days I would take 2 mg and sometimes up to 4mg. I had to stop cold turkey because the OBGYN told me they couldn’t help me. It was the worst feeling I have ever experienced. My symptoms started on approximately day 3 and last about 8 days. I couldn’t sleep, I was dizzy, nauseated, extremely anxious, scared, had really bad sweats, diarrhea and I was so embarrassed. I was lucky to only have the acute one week of severe symptoms and had a normal pregnancy. After giving birth this past February, despite my promises to never take Ativan again, my anxiety was so bad that I gave in and having been taking 1-2mg almost every night, around 6 pm. I don’t have any issues not taking it during the day. I have severe anxiety about taking it again and feel that I need to stop. I’m soooo terrified of going through that again. I was so sick I didn’t even go to work. I’m looking for some support and maybe some advise and information on people that have gone through this where they stopped and then started again. The thought of withdrawing again makes me so terrified. Is there any hope that it won’t be as severe this time ? How do I start ? Looking for hope.

Hi Readytohappy1234  Welcome to Benzobuddies

Congratulations on the birth of your baby!  We are glad that you found our community, you will find plenty of hope here.  Withdrawal can be tougher each time, but you will get through it.  Tapering slow is the best and safest way to come off benzodiazepines. The support and info that you get here is important whilst going through this process. I believe that being amongst people, who understand and know what you’re going through, can make the journey a little easier.  Please feel free to ask questions so that members can respond

The general tapering guidelines are to cut the daily dose by between 5% and 10% every 10 - 14 days. You can alter the schedule according to how you are feeling.  The aim is to keep any withdrawal symptoms manageable.

I would suggest that you familiarise yourself with the Ashton Manual, It is a great resource for understanding the effect benzo’s have on our body.  It provides tapering and withdrawal information and includes a list of common symptoms
