Sick n tired of Mirtazapine taper

I’m exhausted with this &$#€£¥!!! mirtazapine taper. I’m at 2.3mg and it seems I feel worse the lower I go. I wake up every morning feeling terrible and drag through the day, existing, not living. I’m wondering if it has to do with mirtazapines  greater affinity for histamine receptors the lower one goes in dose. I’m seriously considering reducing the dose daily by 0.2mg and getting the hell off and get this crap out of my system once and for all.  Rip off the band-aide!!!  I can’t imagine it being any worse. I am starting to think this slow, by the book taper is just prolonging the misery. Anyone have an advice on this proposal??

Hi pokey,

Sorry you are suffering so much. How long have you been on the 2.3mg? I also had a time in my taper where I woke up feeling absolutely miserable and groggy which lasts through the day. I wasn't sure if this was due to mirtazapine or benzo withdrawal. How far out are you from benzos? I did read somewhere (maybe it was Ashton's) that if you're doing the microtaper and still not stabilized after 2-4 weeks to just keep going with the taper. Hang in there!

The lower doses sure can make you very tired and groggy in the morning, so it could be that. I don't know what your starting dose was, but it probably won't hurt to cut by .2mg and see how you do. I doubt it is the withdrawal. I did not have any issues getting off because I took such a low dose to begin with. I hope this helps and I hope you feel better.

Hi Pokey,

I read around online about withdrawal from Mirtazapine given the truly dreadful experience I have had coming off the massive dose of 90mg in a short time. The recommendation is that one comes down gradually. However, for some people no matter what they do withdrawal symptoms set in. Then the psychiatrist may decide (as did mine) to just get the patient off the drug. Either way there is pain. I have had to accept that. At least I know my brain is trying to adjust without the presence of Mirtazapine to damage it any further. I was banned for the survivingantidepressants.com site for refusing to go back on Mirtazapine (I could not if I had wanted to as neither my GP or psychiatrist were prepared to prescribe it for me). I accept the theory behind the administrators' and moderators' thinking on that site that gradual reduction gives the brain a chance to adjust and the withdrawal symptoms will be less. But sometimes it doesn't work out that way.

And it must also be remembered that everyone is an individual who has been on differing doses for different amounts of time. In my own case I got off 30mg of Mirtazapine with no trouble but had hell getting off 90mg which I had been on for a similar amount of time to the 30mg.

At least you are not having to take sleeping pills - as I have to - to get through this so that is something to be thankful for.

I really wish you the best of luck.

Do you have a GP whom you can talk this through with. Your dose is low so it may be worth investigating the possibility of getting off the drug entirely and giving your body freedom from what has become a poison for you.

Whatever you decided to do, I wish you the best of luck.

Ivan.

Yes my GP thinks at my current low dose the best thing to do is hurry up and get off completely by making 2-3 cuts from 2.3mg and be done with it. I think it’s worth a shot  I’m sick of making liquid mirtazapine and cutting by dibs and dabs and not feeling any better by doing so. I’m tired of have the withdrawal “flu”
