Hi...not sure how to start. Started on Xanax .5mg,  3xdaily during my divorce in 2012!  Had been on numerous antidepressants on and off for 15 yrs before that. Gabapentin is also on my list, almost 15 years now. I've been sick with undiagnosed GI issues(every test normal) as well as increased anxiety, since 2015 when Gabapentin doses got messed up.  I'm in tolerance to xanax.  Somewhere along the way I got down to .25mg 3x day. I plan to drop 100mg more of my Gabapentin to even out those doses to 200mg 3 x day. I suffered inter-dose withdrawal when I took 300mg more at night than my 2 daytime doses. Once that is level again, after tapering 500mg since June, I am starting a slow taper of xanax.

Looking forward to meeting everyone and learning as much as I can to get thru this process....

Hello healingwlove,

Welcome to Benzo Buddies! Divorce is very stressful so it's understandable that you would look for something to help during this time.  What I gather from your introduction is that you are trying to stabilize on gabapentin and will start to taper xanax. Is this correct?

We can offer a lot of support and information to you.  I'm happy that you mentioned a slow taper because that is the best way to taper off benzos.  It allows the central nervous system to adjust to the change of dosage. Generally, a reduction of no more than 5-10% every 10-14 days is suggested. I'll give you a link to the General Taper Plans for additional information.

You might want to read the Ashton Manual before you begin. It is an excellent resource about these types of drugs and how to withdraw. The manual was written by Dr. Heather Ashton, an expert in the field. I'll provide a link to the manual.

Withdrawal can be challenging but with a sensible slow taper it is doable.  You'll meet others in the same situation as yourself who understand withdrawal and will share their experiences with you.  Settle in and do some reading and please ask questions, we're here to help.
