tapering off valium

Hi, I have been on klonopin for 8 years for trigeminal neuralgia. After having a successful surgery I no longer need it and asked my doc to change me over to valium for tapering. I was on a low dose all these years so I started out at 10mg of valium. I am at 4 mg now and will reduce by another mg starting next week. I have many questions and need some advice. I also came off of gabapentin in January and I can't imagine that anything is worse than that.  Thank You

Hi Mobykal  Welcome to Benzobuddies

We are glad that you found us.  I am sorry you have been dealing with trigeminal neuralgia, very painful.  It’s great  to hear that the surgery was successful.  It sounds like you are doing well with the Valium taper, withdrawal from benzos can be very challenging. Tapering slowly is the safest and best way to withdraw from benzodiazepines.  We have a great community here of knowledgeable and friendly people who understand this process.  Feel free to ask questions so that members can respond

I would suggest that you familiarise yourself with the Ashton Manual, It is a great resource for understanding the effect benzo’s have on our body.  It provides Tapering and withdrawal information and includes a list of common symptoms

The general tapering guidelines are to cut the daily dose by between 5% and 10% every 10 - 14 days. You can alter the schedule according to how you are feeling.  The aim is to keep any withdrawal symptoms manageable.
