I'm suffering with complete body numbness....

Hello.  Due to severe medical  on-going problems, I am a 17-year Xanax user-- 4 mg per day over the last few years.  My physician said the government was cracking down on benzo use, and I was very frighteningly dropped abruptly from 4 mg per day to 2 mg per day.  I went through about five days of writhing around on the floor in the fetal position while having constant diarrhea, then, about two weeks later,  a feeling of abject unrelenting terror, a terror so pervasive I could not sit down, stand up, eat any food at all, sleep, or do ANYTHING!  I was finally instructed to go to a behavioral health hospital, which I did.  On the day I went there, my feet were completely NUMB!  So, with my feelings of abject terror and numbness, the doctors there placed me on gabapentin.  This stopped the terror for the most part and somewhat relieved the feet numbness temporarily.  It is now 1 and 1/2 years later, and I have nearly tapered off the last 2 mg of my benzo dose.  However, I want to say that  my entire body is now numb including my face and tongue.  I cannot go anywhere outside my home because, if I walk on any hard surface at all, the numbness in my feet becomes all pervasive and travels up to my knees in such  a fashion that I can't walk at all, then I burst into tears.  My eyes are very sensitive to light, and for the most part, I stay in my house with my drapes closed.  My mental abilities definitely seem off.  I guess what I want to know is:  Do the disastrous symptoms of complete body numbness only occur in those of us who were dropped precipitously at first, rather than a slow taper?

Hello lilyofthevalley  Welcome to Benzobuddies!

I am sorry for what you are going through, It’s awful that you were forced to cut Xanax by 50%,  I can’t begin to imagine how horrific it was for you.  I had numbness, but not as severe as you, it was very scary though, the left side of my face was the worst.  It was enough to send me to hospital,  withdrawal symptoms can mimic serious illness,  always best to get these things checked out.  Please feel free to browse the boards, post questions,  I am sure you will get plenty of support here.

In general it’s advised to cut your daily dose by somewhere between 5% and 10% every 10 - 14 days.  It’s okay to go slower than this, whatever feels comfortable, the aim is to try to keep symptoms manageable.  Withdrawal symptoms can be relentless, but it does get better with time.

I would suggest that you familiarise yourself with the Ashton Manual, It is a great resource for understanding the effect benzo’s have on our body.  It provides tapering and withdrawal information and includes a list of common symptoms

I'll leave you a few links:
