Hello. I have been on and off Ativan the past year and recenetly started experiencing chronic insomnia over the past 4 months. My Dr prescribed me Klonopin to take tid to help and says we will taper off later. I am afraid this is going to make things worse than better. Any suggestions and feedback is greatly appreciated.

Best, Matt

Hi Matt  Welcome to Benzobuddies

We are glad you joined our community!  We can help you with support and taper/withdrawal information.  Some people withdraw with few symptoms,  it's possible that you could be one of them.  In general it’s advised to cut your daily dose by between 5% and 10% every 10 - 14 days.  It’s okay to go slower than this, whatever feels comfortable, the aim is to try to keep symptoms manageable.

Check out the Ashton Manual, It’s great for understanding the effect benzodiazepines have on our body.  It also provides tapering and withdrawal information.  You will find some valuable support and info on the forum.  Please feel free to browse the boards and post questions to any of the dedicated threads.

You might wish to post to the this support group,

Ativan Tapering Support Thread  members will be happy to share their experience and offer advice.

Hey MDV, welcome to bb.  Am I correct in thinking you haven't started the k yet?  If so, imo , don't take it.  You don't need 2 benzo's in your body .  Please do me a favor, go back to the page the moderator sent you, and look for the signature link.  Please feel out your drug history so we can see the big picture and get you the best advice possible, don't forget to hit done :D. The moderator also gave you a link to the Ativan support thread, a great place for you to post your questions.  The tapering link will show you all the different ways you can taper and decide which one sounds best for you.  Good luck, don't forget that signature, again welcome to bb.  Mary 🍀🍀

mdv42 (Mat),

My doctor (years ago) prescribed Klonopin, he said it was "safe".  I'm currently tapering off Clonazepam and there is nothing easy about it.

This is just a personal opinion but giving a person who has been off one benzo a year and putting him on another benzo (and a far more potent one) is just odd as all get out.

Insomnia is very common in people who go off benzos. It is caused by the commotion in your brain, which is trying to heal itself from the Ativan. There are ways to deal with insomnia that do NOT mean you take another drug.

Please don't take the Klonapin.
