introduction from struggling klonopin user

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I'm 36 years old and have been regularly prescribed 2mg of klonopin for -- wow, how long has it been?-- approx. 12-15 years? I'm even under the impression that, as a teenager struggling with depression (and trying to grapple with all the right medications to deal with it), I was briefly prescribed klonopin back then. I am prescribed klonopin for anxiety.

What brings me to this online community is: I have had complicated addiction issues that revolve around klonopin. Although I've benefited enormously from immersing myself in a recovery community (SMART meetings are extremely prevalent and accessible around where I live on the east coast, USA), I've found it is sometimes difficult to talk about my klonopin use at those meetings. Among the reasons, I believe, are since I'm prescribed klonopin by a doctor, people at the meetings are reluctant to engage in what would be perceived as giving medical advice. Also, I'm usually the only one at the meetings with a benzo issue (most common are alcohol use disorders, followed by opiates).

Welcome to BenzoBuddies!  We are glad you decided to join us.  You'll find a lot of support and information on this forum, which is the only one of its kind online.

For those starting a taper, we generally recommend starting out at a rate of 5 to 10% every 10-14 days, then adjusting the taper to suit your own needs.  Note: very short term users may be able to taper faster.

This is the first I've heard about SMART Recovery, and had to look it up.  It's good to know there is an AA alternative.  However, I must note that anonymity is extremely important to us, so we do not condone members here to form in person meet up type groups, or promote them on the forum.

Withdrawal symptoms, which vary widely but commonly include anxiety and insomnia, often occur during a taper, but these are temporary and will get better in time.  In general, first tapers are easier, but cold turkeys or multiple withdrawals may be more severe and longer lasting.  Here are a few links to get you started:

The Ashton Manual, a concise reference for tapering and symptom issues.  Chapter III contains excellent descriptions of common symptoms such as muscle issues, anxiety, and hyper-awareness

Withdrawal Support (during your taper)

Once again, welcome!
