Alcohol

I need you all to tell me alcohol is a big mistake. I’m desperately looking for relief. I haven’t been stable since January when I was prescribed steroids. Goi g to the doctor Monday for bloodwork to see if my thyroid might be off too and contributing to the problem. Just a moment for weakness. George

I can honestly say that Alcohol and caffeine and processed foods are all "no go zones" and

I will add anything with MSG is an absolute no no, I had one these episodes this week.

We are all nutritional experts unfortunately.

Stay Strong !

I had to quit alcohol and kratom before jumping into CT, as I wasn't going to try to withdraw from 4 substances at the same time. That would have been a disaster of epic proportions. I told my husband that I *might* have a beer or two on the 4th of July, but no sooner than that, and maybe not even then. I'll see how it's going at that point.

I personally believe everybody can discipline themselves. It is esy to get addicted and everyone has that capability. A person can also stop. Step boundaries. Say well i'll drink 6 beers and a shot and go home. If you do that you'll be fine. Read this article - https://addictionresource.com/alcohol/treatment/how-to-quit-drinking/ . It should help you too.

Benzo's and Alcohol create Chemical dependency. You can't just stop even with discipline. You can stop, but will be risking your life. I don't mean having a social drink. Also, benzo's and alcohol don't mix. A lot of us on these drugs have a lot of discipline, but can't just stop. It is not like cigarettes.

There’s a good deal of opinion on this thread that isn’t stated as such. Please provide links to valid research if making broad spectrum comments such as some made in this thread.

Not everyone has issues with alcohol. Not everyone has addiction issues.

Thank you,

Georgie, I am so sorry you are still struggling so, and I believe what Challis just posted, however , imo, I wouldn't risk it now while you are in such a bad place.  Love you and have missed you.

Alcohol is a BIG mistake.  There, I've said it.

Dee

I second this. I've been around people addicted to alcohol/problem drinkers since 2003. Alcohol acts on the same receptors as the BZD. The GABA receptors. But it also has euphorizing properties.

A person dependent on the BZD doesn't necessarily have to get addicted to alcohol. But it's best to avoid it. I cannot even count the pdocs who told me that.

Many people start drinking when they are in tolerance to the BZD. Or the opposite. Start taking the BZD cause alcohol no longer gives them relief. No matter how much alcohol they ingest. The BZD potentiate the effect of alcohol for them.

Sometimes they get diagnosed with depression. As a consequence of long-term alcohol abuse. And given an AD. Cause the pdoc doesn't know about alcohol.

The combo of the three can actually be lethal.

NO ALCOHOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Did you personally have a bad experience with alcohol while tapering, or just sharing a firmly held belief?

Not arguing, just curious.

My point, exactly!

I'm really not trying to single you out or embarrass you.  But so many folks share and repeat things on BB that they really have no knowledge of, or no documented evidence.  Folks struggling with withdrawal need honest, objective information.

And I really do appreciate that you answered my question honestly.  Thank you.

I would think that the people on this site would have experience with this so don't there experiences count for something If I wasn't an alcoholic I probably would have knowledge of this but I choose to live and not kill myself with alcohol I also would say their are few facts that can be drawn in w/d since everyone is different Your looking for certainty where there is none and You need to chill

Thanks for sharing. I don't think I can participate in this thread any longer. It's too depressing. My husband is a recovering alcoholic, 16 years sober. His father was cross-addicted to alcohol and the BZD, which both killed him at a young age.

Many of husband's and mine AA friends, addicted to alcohol or to both alcohol and the BZD. Have died. We all have a choice. How to live our life. Yes, some people can drink alcohol and live till 80. I personally consider alcohol addiction worse than the BZD dependence (or addiction). I think this is a general opinion shared in the medical community.

All I can do is to warn people. Like I was warned by my pdoc, specializing in alcohol and BZD addiction. Back in 2002, when I stopped drinking completely. Although I wasn't even a problem drinker. I was "only" dependent on the BZD.

Alcohol in small amounts is probably ok but anymore than 2 drinks per day will probably make things worse IMO. I say this from personal experience. :-)

You should not use alcohol in place of benzos to calm your CNS...huge mistake IMO. You should drink small amounts for pleasure if you wish but not for anxiety relief.

This post isn’t directed at anyone in particular so I’ve removed names simply to illustrate some posting issues.

^ Correctly stated as opinion.    :)

^ This, not so much.  Anything that starts with ‘you should’ or ‘you should not’  is best phrased ‘in my opinion’ (i.e. IMO if that’s easier).

NO ALCOHOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

^ Again, this is opinion and needs to be stated as such. I understand where this comment is coming from and sympathize, but the truth is that we are all going to react differently.

We have many relatively new members and realize many of the new members aren’t familiar with the guidelines for giving advice. When I joined I was in deep cognitive distress and truly had no memory of seeing any rules. But we do have them, they are for well-thought-out reasons and have  worked well for many years.

Let me post them here for everyone’s benefit: Current Registration Agreement

This important one is within those guidelines: Guidelines Regarding the Giving of Medical Advice

Thank you...
