I am joining Benzobuddies because I quit, cold turkey, a week ago and I'm wondering when I'll get my brain and body back.  I took 1 mg Xanax to sleep daily and 1 mg prn for 10 years.  This new, brilliantly colorful and noisy world has me catching my breath.  Just trying to get some accurate information about how long this body and brain "electricity" or "static" (at times) will last.  I quit drinking and Xanax at the same time while in some sort of manic or delusional state, otherwise I may have done it differently.  Having a hard time establishing which side effects are from what and which are short term vs. long.  Hoping this is still some residual short term...Staying positive!  Thanks for the add.

Welcome to BenzoBuddies!  We are glad you decided to join us.  You'll find a lot of support and information on this forum, which is the only one of its kind online.  When a long term user of benzos quits cold turkey, there are usually many severe symptoms, which can last a long time.  This is why we advise people to taper slowly.

For those starting a taper, we generally recommend starting out at a rate of 5 to 10% every 10-14 days, then adjusting the taper to suit your own needs.  Note: very short term users may be able to taper faster.

Withdrawal symptoms, which vary widely but commonly include anxiety and insomnia, often occur during a taper, but these are temporary and will get better in time.  In general, first tapers are easier, but cold turkeys or multiple withdrawals may be more severe and longer lasting.  Here are a few links to get you started:

The Ashton Manual, a concise reference for tapering and symptom issues.  Chapter III contains excellent descriptions of common symptoms such as muscle issues, anxiety, and hyper-awareness

Once again, welcome!

Hi & Welcome to the Group!  Congratulations on quitting that awful drug!  Cold Turkey isn't ideal but it's not the end of the world either!  I too was uninformed & I did a cold turkey, I'm now 8 1/2 months Benzo free after 7 years & I'm doing really well. I still have some symptoms but the pale compared to what they were!  So hang in there & Stay Strong!
