Just Getting Started

Hi, I only recently figured out I have a Benzo problem.  I have had a prescriptions for xanax of many years, never increased it, or took on a regular basis.  But this year, I have had several big life events, and suddenly realized I was having to take it several times a day.  I haven't had trouble with overuse of anything before, but I just met with my doctor yesterday, and agree I have a dependency problem now.  Fortunately, she is an excellent doctor, and has known me for 15 years, and has had direct experience getting people off of benzos.  So I'm encouraged by that, but discouraged I have to add this to the list of issue I am dealing with.  I just filled my first prescription for valium, so I'm in the process of making the switch now.  Just bought Dr. Ashton's book.  So I'm in for the long haul, and understand it is a long haul, but that it can be successful.  Thanks for your site.

The Ashton Manual provides information that can be useful during any stage of withdrawal and recovery, and includes a list of common symptoms with helpful explanations.

For those who are currently tapering, a starting guideline is that the dosage not be reduced faster than by 5-10% every 10-14 days, although some taper even more slowly than that. One exception: very short-term users of a few weeks or less may be able to taper somewhat faster.

Hey Gmorgjr, welcome to bb. We have lots of information and experienced people on here to help with your taper.  I need you to do me a favor, the moderator left you a link to go to your signature where you can give us your drug history, that really helps us give you the best advice possible.  There are lots of ways to taper and you may want to read about them on our board, to pick the right one for you.  Welcome again, hope to see that signature soon.  Mary  :D
