How many here have unbearable nerve pain?  What have you tried for relief?  Is it constant or does it come and go?

Thank you for your replies.

I have had awful nerve pain from the start of this dreadful mess almost 2 years ago, mostly in my legs and feet, i'm 16 months off and it's still there in my feet but only comes in my legs when a wave (tsunami) comes. I haven't taken anything for it, i just try and distract from it, i am too terrified to take another pill for anything ever again especially as the meds that are usually given (Lyrica, Gabapentin) act on gaba receptors.

Nerve pain is usually due to decreased dopamine as well as unregulated receptors.  A long time ago when I was in school, I was taught that 98% of all input into the nervous system is disregarded.  Think of it- do you really "feel" your underwear on a normal day?  The problem in withdrawal is the down regulation, where the body evaluates, "Is this an emergency? Do I need to take action?", is not working. You get overwhelmed more easily.

This applies to pain receptors as well.  Higher cortisol (stress hormone) will indirectly help make pain causing chemicals. So the same creaky joint or old injury your body usually could ignore, comes to the forefront.

I use benfotiamine for pain, especially nerve pain. It is a thiamine (b vitamin) derivative, but doesn't seem to have any of the speed up/hyper-reactions of some of the Bs. No chance of overdose. I am very sensitive to meds/supplements, and am able to use it frequently without issue.  My source is iherb.com.

Highly encourage you to try it.

Thank you all for sharing.  I’m sorry so many are having to deal with this issue.  I hope it passes soon for all of you.

Does anyone have it 24/7?  If so, how are you sleeping?

Oh yes, the last months the nerve pain is so, so bad. Currently in the late evening and last untill approx 4 am. No chance to sleep. I am heading into month 26 and the nerve pain is letting up in some areas while other areas are very intens. I have it or had it from head to tooth. Litteraly every part of my body. I agree with the dopamine and cortisol explanation. I let the wave pass and than pray for a better day or night.

Do you think the nerve pain in a specific area is due to a lack of dopamine?

Nerve pain is sooo bad!  24/7 for months ... I don’t sleep!  My feet and lower legs go wild when I lay down.

To Hopehope- Specificity of the pain location can be due to more than one factor:  1) was there an injury to the area?  If so, how bad. 2) Is this an old injury from childhood that never fully goes away? 3) Are your pain patterns related to the body organs being stressed? 4) Do you have an underlying condition like lymes' or fibromyalgia?

Injury-  When nerve tissue is damaged, it can grow back in a pattern called neural sprouting. Crush injuries are the worst for this.  Instead of have a "normal" sized nerve receptor, you might have 100 tiny ones. The threshold to annoy a tiny one is much smaller than what it takes to excite the big guy. If you have one large electrical cable versus a whole bunch of extension cords, which one do you think will work better? Which one has the greater chance of overheating or breaking? Metabolites from drugs can change the firing potential, and make dormant stuff active.

Old injury- If it was a broken bone, etc- did all the biomechanics get realigned post?  If not, your gait, sleep habits, etc. can aggravate the surrounding structures. Usually knees give way because of problems elsewhere. Expl: New tires will be crap if you don't realign the front end. Withdrawal makes this normal wear and tear feel worse.

Organ related-  Everyone knows the heart attack symptom of left arm pain.  Different organs may experience stress at different times. If your mid-low back hurts, it can be the adrenals on top of the kidneys. If right lower gut near hip bone, it's the illeocecal valve between the large and small intestine. At the home of the appendix. GI upset.  Right upper gut pain radiating to the back shoulder blade is usually gallbladder aggravation.  All these organs can "flare-up" due to whatever chemical you're detoxing.

Others- If you come to withdrawal carrying the monkey of some metabolic issue on your back, it can really be a handicap.  Blood sugar can fluctuate a great deal so those with diabetes may have a hard time regulating insulin.  If PCOS, you may have worsening period pain.  I have thyroid issues, and I'm having to alter my meds as the old dose seems like too much. All these things generally add to inflammation.  This leads to pain.

Taking things like quality fish oil, ghee, or butter help to soothe the nerves by providing anti-inflammatory fats. I refer to other posts about the usefulness of a moderate keto diet due to the higher portion of fats.  Remember-no fasting!  Benfotiamine (thiamine derivative) helps  a lot, and no adverse effects.

Hope this helps to clarify.

Hothhhot,

This is very interesting, mine was a wrist fracture, but the damage was aggravated by a physical therapist, who compromised the ulnar nerve causing muscle loss in my hand and arm. This happened three years ago. I had surgery to release the ulnar nerve. Three days ago, a few days after jumping my arm  and hand started bothering me again.

I’ll give eating the right fats a try.

oh so sorry Fighting, et al

i hope + pray you all find relief somehow + soon.

Hothot : i try to avoid reading post-wd stuff.... but need to find a way to help myself off these poisons.

i have ALL that's in your detailed reply above.... + high stress.... + was given Lyrica to help.... + to help tapering.

but 4 small doses only made things 10x worse, almost 5 months ago  :(

tho i know Lyrica has helped others.... so please don't let my complex probs discourage you.

need to check out that B vit you suggest -- tho cannot tolerate meds/supps either -- but desperate.

stopped all supps last yr when GP starting messing me up.

no OTC pain meds help -- tylenol or iburofen -- just worsen Sxs.

vegetarian -- but force myself to eat wild salmon -- never could eat fish -- but thought better than supps.

did / can you take this B vit while trying to taper ?

many thanks x

Terrible 24/7 nerve pain, since last dose...well, for about 2 months' prior, even.  (That had been a concern since I was given ativan for pain management.)  Trigger points especially bad.  Every day I seem to have more pain & different locations.  Feet are a constant.  Lately, left thigh, too.  Just ordered 1 pair compression sleeves for ankles.  Daily use of aspercreme w/lidocaine.  I believe it was lidocaine that was in trigger point injections I'd gotten over 2 courses of treatments for fibromyalgia (about 4 years apart; different physiatrists/pain medicine specialists, followed by physical therapy & PT massage).

I had r. ankle x-ray while @ ER 2 weeks ago (concerned about edema & possibility of DVT blood clot.  R. ankle hurts worse.  X-ray: no fracture.  It could be a ligament tear; only shows up on MRI...learned this later from a friend/was lucky they even ordered the x-ray!) They did Doppler Scan = fine)  Think edema increased from too long on computer previous 2 days.  The ones I ordered come in many colors & I didn't have to do extra, very specific measuring first.  TechWave Pro Akle Brace Compression Sleeves.  Feel these, hopefully, will help w/the edema & also give ankles support.  They probably do roll, as I know I pronate when I walk, which could've caused a ligament tear.  I didn't hear/feel/sense a poop, but that doesn't mean it didn't occur.  R. ankle's hurt since last August.  To help w/the thigh pain, ordered Sojoy IGel Seat Cushion for this torturous desk chair...hoping these measures will provide some relief/comfort.

Had been rx'd lyrica some years back.  I think I took 1; very dizzy.  An Aunt had successfully taken it for a couple of years, then developed swelling & stopped.

I don't know how folks are posting links for other forums/thread/posts here.  Anyone care to share that, please post, or PM-thanks.  There's lots on the Alternative Treatments Forum re: Alpha Lipoic Acid (ALA) for nerve pain.  I'd read lots there & did further research to decide which form (ALA or RLA), Mfr. & dose.  This took time.  Settled on Doctor's Best ALA 600 mg.  Just took 1st dose today; so, will post on how it's going @ a later date.

Wishing all here better days...:smitten:
