To hold or not to hold

Recommended Posts

After a pretty good taper at a rate of 0.001 from 0.174 in tablet weight ratio. I’ve cut from 2.75mg to 1.95 mg of diazepam over weeks and months. Doctor asked me to hold now as I felt quite panicking again

I have but it’s in waves now and I feel I should push on ?

I have a family holiday in six weeks which worries me, I want to be ok for those two weeks for my boy but I’m thinking of slowing taper to 0.001 every 2/3 days now so I’ll be staying at about 5% drop as currently Ive been doing 5/8% but as meds’ get lower %goes up

What’s your thoughts my friends

I think Ashton would advise plodding on.

Anticipatory anxiety is a factor.

Personally I would hold two weeks before and during your holiday.

Its a job that needs finishing in your own good time, not a race

Best wishes

Dick

That’s the trouble sometimes I just want off so going a little to quick. I think I will gently plod on. My doctor just worries I think as I developed a panic disorder when I cold turkied befor rienstatement and taper

I don’t mind the SFX it’s when it lasts hours rather than 20.30 mins at a time I get a little worried

Good luck on your journey also dude

I belong to a site no more panic, but use deep guided relaxation for panic.

I also take propranolol if I feel a wave of increased anxiety.

I’m with you

But I don’t want any meds for anything

This experience has taught me meds treat symptoms not causes and I certainly don’t trust doctors anymore

I went in for RLS which I can now control with diet 🤦‍♂️Still shit happens and moving on

Thanks for the info though dude I will check it out !

Hey Ocean..

Sorry, my first thought was you could ask member Sundanceshaman about her one last cut before a holiday... :(

I guess its a combination of your taper history, and just how much caution you wish to allocate to ensuring the holiday has its best chance... There is also the question of the relevance of your actual taper to symptoms, ie.anticipatory anxiety, as mentioned...

I would like to think I would hold, knowing that in reality my body would still be working hard with healing tasks, and that could even have some extra value at low dose prior to cessation, but in reality I did often cut on a whim.. :( -Even if I had to dose correct a bit..

It probably also comes down to your tapering beliefs, and Jump or Step off plans to some extent.

A reduction in speed could be good middle ground for you..??

I do hope it all goes well and you have a great time.. I have had a couple of holidays at low dose and inbetween tapers.. They had their own healing value that wasnt insignificant...

All the best...

That worked well for me when I had cataract surgery, I held 2 weeks before and 5 days after and I was much calmer through the whole process than I thought possible  :)

Also my plan is to taper as low as possible to jump

I won’t be jumping at .5mg but more like 0.1mg

Sounds good.. :)

I highly doubt you will regret it...

:)

  • 2 weeks later...

Not sure what to do here ?

Held but now getting sharp burning stabbing pain and cramps

Wondering if holding is causing tolerance or was this going to happen anyway

Currently held at 1.9 mg diazepam for two weeks over the last 7 weeks in total tapered gently from 2mg to 1.9 mg

Anyone else had these pains come then go ?

Many times Ocean.  On, off, pain, ie.

If it were me, I'd hold for the two weeks, but if holding is causing problems, why not follow your original plan and continue gentle taper?  You can always pull up.

Agree that anticipatory anxiety can be powerful.

It’s not anticipated anxiety

I just can’t make up my mind

My head says staying still to long stops the brain healing and starts depending rather than very gently backwards still maintaining the brain healing

?

My thoughts

Thinking 1% each week untill after the holiday then resume 5% ? I know 10% every two weeks is to fast for me I do butter at 5%

That sounds like a very reasonable and sensible plan Ocean.

You'll be able to enjoy your holiday at 1% each week.

We deserve to enjoy something, I reckon.  :)

I would try to keep to a slow reduction with the knowledge things are healing.

I read a paper sent to me a while back saying that at 1 mg only 4% of gaba sites are affected and that’s why you can jump then. Certainly if I get to your position that’s my plan.

Meanwhile we plod on but hope for times of pleasure.  Enjoy your holiday!

Thanks dick

Nice to hear from people I think I will gently plod on. Depending how I feel I plan to jump at about 0.1mg as I can cut it that low and just walk off this crap !

Your gut is better at judging than any of us will be, but keep an eye on those sxs  :). M.

Hi OceanDude:  You mention that the percentage cut increases as the total dose decreases. I agree and it is found that this leads to increased symptoms near the end of a taper.  The easiest way I have found to address this is the Attenuation Phase built into Jim Hawks’s Application program on the BB site. I did the math and it essentially slows the cut to one third the rate previously being done. The “Read Me” first button on the program  explains it well. This should avoid any need to hold, but of course  everyone is different.

I hope this helps and I wish you a great vacation!
