Underlying mental ilness

Dont know if its the right forum, but i wonder if some you as me are suffering from bipolar or other underlying illness, which actually need basic treatments e.g SSRI, mood stabilezers or anti psychotics etc. which benzoes cant provide. Most people here say slow and hang on til its over but i find this advice potentially to be very bad if someone suffers month in and month out.

People tend to suffer much harder from benzo withdrawals  if they are depressed etc. And i was too, but i made it through fast in an inpatient setting. And finally found the medicin i needed Seroquel+lamictal, not Seroquel+Lithium which i tapered of benzoes and made me more depressed and harder.

I guess most people taper of with doctors advice, and they consider this but still its something to ask oneself, right?

The thing is though, benzos and z drugs can cause quite bad depression and anxiety, just through prolonged use, and you have no idea whether you'd still have this when you come off.  I had terrible anxiety, depression, self loathing, OCD, agoraphobia and social phobia when I was using z drugs long term.

Now that I have been off for a year - I still have OCD moderately, but it doesn't stop me doing so very much, not like it used to when I was taking zopiclone.  The agoraphobia, depression and social phobia have gone, and the anxiety is very much reduced.

What are 'z' drugs? And the anxiety, depression, self loathing that you mention while on psych drugs, they were not there before you got on them? I ask because I'm someone who is not sure what is benzo-related and what is "original." Thank you.

A Z drug is any drug that starts with a z, like zolpedium (spelling?) You should look at the Ashton Manual.

Good guess :), but no. Zantac and Zocor, for example, are *not* z-drugs.

Z-drugs are a class of drugs prescribed for sleep. Examples are Ambien (zolpidem) and Lunesta (eszopiclone). They are similar to benzos and cause a similar dependence and withdrawal syndrome. In my opinion they are bad stuff and to be avoided!

I see. Thanks for the information.
