It's recently come to my attention that I am an 'accidental addict' of Xanax. I'm in the early stages of withdrawal and cannot believe that physical and mental anguish this causes....

Hello, AddictinAvon :) - welcome to BenzoBuddies!

It really is unbelievable how terrible the symptoms can be in withdrawing from benzos. Luckily, the physical and mental pain resolves over time, and planning a more comfortable taper can relieve some of the suffering in the meantime.

The Ashton Manual is an authoritative resource on what to expect during withdrawal and recovery. It provides information that can be very reassuring during any stage of this process, including a list of common symptoms with helpful explanations.

For those who are currently tapering, a starting guideline is that the dosage not be reduced faster than by 5-10% every 10-14 days, although some taper even more slowly than that. One exception: very short-term users of a few weeks or less may be able to taper somewhat faster.

Welcome to the accidental addict club.  It's horrible alright.  My heart goes out to you.

Yeah I can't believe how terrible this is. I mean, I'll get through it, but damn it's weird and scary as the mind comes back 'online'. I'm seeing and hearing things I haven't experienced in over a decade. And it's all at once. Doesn't help that I'm jittery and sweating and antsy and unable to focus on anything (other than counting down the minutes until I feel better...whenever that is going to be).

It's criminal what malpractice has done.  >:(

Interesting you mention that. I generally take responsibility for my actions and hate to blame others, but in this instance I can't help but feel like my MD has dropped the ball. I went from 1 mg per day to 4 mg per day and he didn't bat an eye. I've mentioned wanting to get off and he's done really nothing about it...except write another script. I don't know...
