C/T Valium and thinking of trying Quetiapine

I C/T'd Valium 34 days ago and thinking of trying Quetiapine 12.5mg to help me sleep and reduce morning anxiety.

Has anyone tried it with success?

It does work for some people. It worked for me before benzo wd. I took 25mg for sleep and anxiety. It was less like sleep and more like unconsciousness for me, made me ravenously hungry, caused lots of weight gain and made me feel zombified during the day. This was all before benzo wd... After my jump off benzos I continued to take seroquel every night for the first month of wd. It had stopped working so I quit. For me, nothing stopped the insomnia or the anxiety. It also has the potential to come with its own wd. I hope it works well for you. Insomnia really sucks.

I took 12.5mg last night. It really didn't help my sleep. I was sweating even more than normal. Woke up with the same anxiety but some other strange feelings. More air hunger. More shaking. More mental anguish if that's possible. I will not take this again. It's now 19 hours since I took the 12.5mg and I can't believe it's having such a huge effect on me. It's really hard to measure anxiety pain because it seems to be different many times. I can't seem to slow down my breath and I feel really jittery inside. I'm also more groggy.

At this point I'm not sure I want to introduce anything new in my system. I tried Gabapentin and made me feel worse as well.

Is it possible that during my Benzo withdrawal, my body is more sensitive? I haven't reacted well to Gabapentin and Serequel.

When will this feeling stop?

I feel for you! It sucks there isn’t anything to ease our suffering and everything I’ve tried just makes it worse. Strength and healing to you. Xoxo

Yes, our bodies are definitely more sensitive during benzo wd. Things that I was able to tolerate well before are either not working now or I'm having paradoxical reactions to them. The central nervous system is like an angry bear right now. The last thing we should do is poke it with a stick. I wish I could tell you when this feeling will stop. It's so different for everyone.

I took Seroquel (quetiapine) all through my withdrawal and I feel like it did help a lot with sleep.

The science says that it has a strong antihistamine effect at low doses, and increasing the dose only affects the dopamine receptors. So if you're not interested in the antipsychotic effect then you only need to take 50 or 100mg. I take a pretty high dose though.

One thing I'll say is that when you're anxious and panicky, taking a punch-to-the-jaw knockout pill like Seroquel can be really nerve wracking. When I would take Seroquel IR, I would feel like I'm being pulled under the ocean and have an instinctive panic response that brought me wide awake and set my heart racing. Switching to Seroquel XR fixed that. And there's a generic out now, finally.

I've heard pretty grim stories of withdrawing from antipsychotics though, so you might want to be careful. I've never tried.

I just hated this med. Made me wake up at night after 3 hrs. Eat like a pig. Killed all my creativity. It’s for ppl with BP or schizophrenia, IMO. Pdocs prescribe it “off-label” for sleep. Tapered during 4 mos in the end of 2015. Jumped off 1 mg in Jan. 2016. Ended in psych ward as a result of temporary psychosis. Got tons of it at home. Would never again touch it. Don’t know why I keep it. Probably cause I’m a hoarder.

How long and how much did you take it?

I used to take Seroquel 25mg during my acute lorazepam tolerance withdrawal. I took it for a month and tapered a quarter of a pill every week. It helped with insomnia, but it is indeed a nasty drug and I agree with the other posters' opinion.

Hmm no experience of Seroquel but it concerns me you are combining this with trazodone.  Bit of a cocktail there and I have read of bad side effects of Seroquel.

I,ve been tempted myself to try it but after reading of scary side effects have decided to stay clear.  I am taking 50mg of trazodone for sleep and don't intend to increase - hit and miss results, but don't want any more drugs in my system than necessary.

I have not reacted well to gabapentin either and have stopped taking that having used it sporadically for a few weeks.

Have you tried a small dose of melatonin.

Yeah, may be good for a benzo taper. Unfortunately some ppl become terribly addicted to it. Causes diabetes. I used to take it for like 14 yrs. 200 mg during my first 3 mos’ benzo WD in Fall 2002. Was off benzos for 11 yrs. Plus a cocktail of other drugs at that time: Zoloft, Tegretol, Vistaril and Propanolol included. Wouldn’t have made it without those other drugs. Then, since 2003. I took a maximum of 6,25 mg Seroquel for sleep. With different ADs. Seroquel will not help with the morning anxiety, BTW. That’s my experience, of course.

I had never heard of Seroquel until I was recently in the hospital. I was switching SSRIs (from the new one that didn't work back to the old one that did :brickwall:) and couldn't sleep. I started with 100mg (my understanding is that is a small dose) and it knocked me clean out. Since the SSRI has kicked in, the dose has been lowered to 75mg. I didn't have any problems with the taper and my psych assures me that it won't be difficult to taper off the remaining dose. It's been a real blessing for me during my Klonopin taper as I can be sure that at the end of the day I will be able to fall asleep.

As far as negative effects, it knocks me out for about 8-9 hours. It is very difficult for me to get up with less sleep. I also sleep very deeply - almost nothing wakes me up.

I saw my primary care physician two weeks ago and all of my lab work came back great.
