Hello:) I am new here.

I am 34 years old and i have been on Alprazolam (Xanax) for about 10 years now for Social Anxiety and General Anxiety. I am currently on 3mg (1mg tablets) a day and at one stage i was on 6mg a day. I have reduced my dose by half for the past 7 days but felt like i am having a heart attack and went back up to my original dose ( i was too confident and it backfired) Since today i have started to reduce my dose by 0.5 a months. I am here to seek help and give some advice if needed because i went through a lot of ups and downs during the past 10 years on benzos and i feel like i can help even though i need some help myself. Thanks in advance to everyone.

Hello, David :) - welcome to BenzoBuddies!

Congrats on your plan to taper off the benzos - you're going to be so glad you did. That was a pretty sharp reduction, so it's not hard to see why you felt as though you were having a heart attack. You've definitely come to the right place to plan a more comfortable taper.

The Ashton Manual is an authoritative resource on what to expect during withdrawal and recovery. It provides a great deal of information that can be very reassuring during any stage of this process, including a list of common symptoms with helpful explanations.

For those who are currently tapering, a starting guideline is that the dosage not be reduced faster than by 5-10% every 10-14 days - some taper even more slowly than that. One exception: very short-term users of a few weeks or less may be able to taper somewhat faster.

Hey David, welcome. You'll find a lot of people here with stories like yours, and you'll find a lot of support as you taper from Xanax. I don't know what I'd do in darker moments if it were not for the stories and the support of people on this forum. It's like a beacon in a dark valley. I'd start by reading the success stories: there are so many people who have suffered for years, even decades of benzo use, and emerge from benzo dependence far better, even, than there were before they first started the drugs. You're in good company, and I look forward to your fellowship.
