I joined to helpmy best childhood friend who is on benzos for 40 years and wants to stop.  I need information and support for her.  We are looking for medical practioner in the Boston area who can help her start a taper. She cannot do it herself. Please help us find someone who know about benzos. Her current doctor is cutting down her klonapin dose from 2mg daily to 1 mg daily. And she won't change that. We need someone else asap. My friend is very vulnerable and has terrible headaches, and to compensate she drinks a little. Please help!

Hello, sundari :) - welcome to BenzoBuddies!

It's very kind of you to help your friend - has she considered joining BenzoBuddies herself? We do have members in the Boston area who may be able to suggest doctors that can help. One thing I would suggest is that your friend refrain from drinking, as alcohol targets the same neurotransmitters as benzos, and that will only make withdrawal more difficult in the long run.

The Ashton Manual is an authoritative resource on what to expect during withdrawal and recovery. It provides a great deal of information that can be very reassuring during any stage of this process, including a list of common symptoms with helpful explanations.

For those who are currently tapering, a starting guideline is that the dosage not be reduced faster than by 5-10% every 10-14 days - some taper even more slowly than that. One exception: very short-term users of a few weeks or less may be able to taper somewhat faster.
