Can a fast withdrawal cause physical/brain damage?

I would like to understand better the withdrawal process. I wonder if very fast changes can, apart from the nasty symptoms, cause permanent damage to the brain or body... I.e. if the need for a slow tapering is also a matter of safety rather than just of comfort.

Does anyone know about this subject, or can recommend some reading?

Parker's post is indeed amazing. From it, we can conclude that benzos can be tapered as fast as our tolerance to discomfort and our need to remain functional allow.
