Hi buddies,

I'm 6 months off.  I have had this breathing problem since the 3rd or 4th month off.  It would come and go and I would have to work at taking a full breath.  For the past week it is throughout each day and now upon trying to fall asleep and throughout the night.  I struggle and struggle to get a full breath while yawning.  I now have to raise my arms while trying in order to increase my chances.  Even when driving I have to raise at least one arm.  It's gotten so bad that many times I cannot take a full breath and give up then try again later.  It is so uncomfortable and distressing.  It seems to increase with stress but it's there when there is not stress and was never this bad before.  Has anyone had this go away and when?

I had it. It's so annoying. But it went away as quickly as it came. I felt like an elephant was sitting on my chest, and had horrible air hunger. It will go away, I promise.

You have air hunger. I have it, too, and it's probably my worst symptom. I've had it since before my taper and it eased up mostly a couple months after I jumped (I've been off clonazepam since June of 2016). I've been in a setback since May and the air hunger came back pretty bad. I've had to remember how to cope. My tips would be to remember that it is a fairly common, though awful, withdrawal symptom, to do diaphamic breathing exercises when it gets bad (breathe into your stomach instead of your chest; try to breathe in for 4, hold for 7, out for 8...or breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth, exhaling longer than inhaling), and distract yourself as much as you can. I won't lie, it's a scary symptom and hard to deal with, but I haven't stopped breathing yet and I remind myself of that often. It will eventually go away. Hang in there.

I had it, still do to a degree but nobody thinks it's withdrawal, as it's developed into a horrendous, hacking, whooping, chronic cough. It's so bad now me and my husband can no longer sleep in the same room or anything, it basically sounds as if I am screaming with my lungs and the bottom of my throat when it starts.

It's normally triggered by bending down, laying down or lifting my arms. I'm physically disabled by this and what is now over 40 different symptoms.

I have been referred to the respiratory consultants but they're obviously not bothered due to the three month wait I've had to endure. The appointment isn't until the end of this month.

I'm going back to my doctors next week because it's got worse, as it's now happening spontaneously without me changing posture and the pain in my throat (including constant sore throats from coughing) back and chest are constant.

I'm only 31 but I am coughing like an 90 year old chain smoker. It's severely effecting not only my life now, but my husband and even next door neighbors lives too. I often cough all night non stop, waking everyone around me up too.

Thank you all so much for your replies.  Thank goodness for bb! I am so sorry for those who have had and especially those who still have this symptom.  It was rough yesterday as I had lost hope when I usually have it at least to some degree.  I went to the chiropractor and found out my hiatal hernia(caused by benzos too) was out and it is right in the spot where your diaphragm is and affects breathing in addition to the benzo breathing problem.  After that I started slowly breathing more easily and it's much better today.

Chigrrl-thanks for the diaphragmatic breathing tips.  My chiro is having me put a small rubber ducky on my stomach and I lay down (not all the way) and make sure the ducky in going up and down with my breath.  I have been breathing wrong for a long time and have to learn how to breath.  I've been doing this while I watch tv today.

DappleApple-That sounds horrible and miserable.  I hope there is something that can help you or that it will get better soon.  Best to you for your respiratory appointment.

I have been having this as well...it comes and goes.. I notice it is real bad if I eat or drink too much, so eating and drinking less at a time seems to help me a little bit, so does walking unless it's really bad. Try to sleep sitting in a recliner too... That helped me a little. This is one of my most annoying and shitty symptoms I am dreading when it comes back. I feel for all you guys...so much. Hang in there.
