Amongst my plethora of withdrawal symptoms the decline in cognition has resulted in a terrible memory, and i mean terrible. Ive always liked reading but now its tricky because when I go back to my book I cant even remember what has happened, or even sometimes what the book has been about. My mind is just blank. Im forever telling myself I need to do this or that and It pretty much always slips out of my mind immediately. I cant think of the right words to use when I talk (or write), its like Ive lost myself, I really hate it. I think this is probably how someone with early stage dementia must experience the world. This symptom is very distresing and embarrassing, especially when Im around other people (which isnt often). Will my memory come back completely???

I'm distressed, frustrated and embarrassed by memory loss too. I've been dealing with it for so long as a side effect of medications that it almost seems normal at this point. Everyone says you recover from all the cognitive problems. I don't see why you wouldn't recover your memory if this wasn't a problem for you before.

Hi Sunshine!

The memory thing is horrible.  I'm also an avid reader and I would find myself reading a paragraph and then re-reading it several times because I couldn't remember what I read. Beyond upsetting! But about three weeks ago my memory started to improve and now I can read and retain like before this madness.  I'm a month a head of you in this, every day our brain is healing. You will see an improvement and because everyone's brains are different you may even see it sooner. Regardless if it's now or in the coming months it will happen.  I thought that it's I have to accept that I now how the memory of a newt! But our brains are miraculous and we are still healing every day. Slow and scary but you will heal  :smitten:

Stay strong buddy

I am 13 months out and memory is coming back. It's not the best but is it amazing compared to early in withdrawal. I felt just like you did at one point, so don't worry!

Things that really helped me: I got this app "luminosity" for my iPhone. Memory games, etc. at first I was terrible at it then started to surprise myself. Reading things like magazines, even the same one, over and over until little articals started to stick with me. I keep one around for a week, then when I'm going back over it go "oh yeah, I read that i remember that." Any bits of little information you can read, then go back to later.

Just keep on trying and trying new things. It will get better
