I've got really bad digestion problems for no reason I can pinpoint other than the stress of quitting quitting benzos.  Is this where the term "benzo belly" comes from?

I'm chronically bloated,  use to have about 10 BM a day til opiates came around after a bad reaction it switched to IBS-C.  It almost seems like Sibo,  but have doubts it's a real medical problem.

Havent figured out what the bloating is,  even one bite of something will cause a reaction, even water.

I believe the dysfunctional digestion is causing depression,  as their is a correlation.

Did you recently quit a benzo? What you are describing is benzo belly and can include digestion problems, acid reflux, stomach pain, nausea, bloating, food sensitivities, diarrhea, constipation, intestinal pain, gas, etc. Severe GI problems are common in withdrawal. It's possible to have another condition on top of benzo withdrawal causing this but you would need to see a doctor to know.

I quit last summer and noticed the digestion problems in December about.  So it did take awhile..maybe not related?

I've yet to see a GI doctor.

Thanks for clarifying,  I always thought benzo belly meant constipation while being on benzos.

Like the others have said, see your health practitioner for confirmation.

I had benzo belly. Mine like a ripple, it was like water inside. After studying health more, I've found out that it was due to my damaged liver, so I began to eat healthy and things like that to support my liver.

Later on I had CT scan and it was confirmed that I had benign liver calcification, post inflammation. Besides my love for junk food, I was also sure that psych meds also had a hand on this.

Now I don't have that extreme bloating or belly fat, added the fact that I also experienced terrible weight loss from this withdrawal. Since I tried my best to eat healthy, my overall energy is also improved.

Xbenzo,

Did you feel any pain from the liver calcification or liver inflammation. I have pain on might right upper abdominal, just below the ribs. And I get pain right behind it in the back. Did you get pain or have any symptoms from this? And what did you take to clear it up?

Hey guys, before I begin, I want to make a disclaimer: First of all, I'm not a health practitioner whatsoever, so my suggestion here only serves as input that you might want to consider AFTER consulting your health practitioner. As I'm into nutritional and holistic, natural health, my point of view here is from functional medicine practitioners' perspective, therefore, if your health preference is not the same as mine, then it's cool, no need for debate, I just want to share what I've learned and proved as beneficial to myself. Okay, that being said, here we go:

nhbuck28: prilosec is for GERD / acid reflux / heartburn isn't it? Well, here is my advice for this.

GERD is in fact caused by low stomach acid (insufficient stomach acid), therefore, we need to acidify the stomach. In order to digest well, especially protein, you need stomach pH between 1-3 (the lower the pH the more acidic it is). Remember that I'm talking about stomach pH here, as there are many pH units in the body, each with their own different normal range of pH. For the stomach, it should be very very acidic. If the stomach pH is between 1-3, the esophageal sphincter closes, so the acid won't regurgitate. You can try natural supplement Betaine HCL, take it with meal containing at least 6oz of protein (about the size of your palm). It is a natural acidifier made from beet. I myself have managed my GERD for good, it is 80-90% gone in most of my days. But REMEMBER this, before acidifying it, you need to make sure that you DON'T HAVE any stomach ulcers, gastritis or things like that, since it can aggravate the symptoms if you put more acid on it. If you had those, heal it first with things like chlorophyll, and then acidify after it heals. I myself made mistake by not putting more attention to this.

I knew my belly was caused by my liver problem from a book, again, written by a practitioner of functional medicine. What caused it was all my love for junk food, fried food (fried food is bad for the liver), and things like that, for many many years of my life. Even my conventional health practitioner, whom I visited when I was confirmed of liver calcification by CT scan, said the same thing.

New girl: Yes I also had the pain (although it had only started recently, couple of months). The right upper abdominal area is where the gallbladder is, which works hand in hand with liver which located above it. Anything good for the liver, is good for the gallbladder, vice versa. But just for your information, the liver has to be damaged 90% for it to be shown on the test. But the good news is that this is one of the organs that is able to regenerate 100% given its proper care, although it could take up to 3 years to do so. The pain can also travel to your right shoulder, right back, headache (almost 90% of headache is from gallbladder).

What I did was I tried my best to remove all junk / fried food as it is bad for the liver. I also added food that are cleansing for the liver such as beet (thinning the gallbladder bile duct - but as beet contains high oxalate, beware if your body / medical conditions can't tolerate it), green apple (avoid this if you had stomach ulcer / gastritis since it is acidic), and cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, radish, kale, etc. - cruciferous veggies cleanse the liver - these veggies also relatively high in oxalate). I eat lots of salad (green leafy vegetables such as lettuce, etc.) - but if you had stomach ulcer / gastritis, avoid eating raw and steam it instead (don't fully steam it as it can decrease drastically the nutrients). Try not to consume huge amount of water 30 minutes before / after meals, as water can dilute stomach acid you need to digest the food, so, I just sip a little bit after meals to help clear my throat. And avoid eating excess protein / fat as bad liver / gallbladder can't handle this well yet.

Alright guys, I hope this helps.

The gas I got when I CTed for 3 months was downright terrifying.  I could pass gas for literally a minute, making me question how it was possible.  It wasnt the least of my concerns at the time, but I found that Probiotics fixed whatever was terribly wrong with my intestines.
