Hello,  I am here because I had a very rough time a few months back (April) with crippling anxiety and depression.  I was prescribed Trazadone ( which I had to discontinue because of side effects) and Ativan 1 mg "as needed"

I ended up on mirtazapine 30 mg and unfortunately, took the Ativan 1 mg a day - all that to get through the anxiety in one piece.

I didn't have any tolerance issues and did not increase the dose.  At my last psych appointment, I met with the the head of the practice who was shocked that the attending doctor allowed the prescription to go on as long as she had.  She renewed it with a stern warning that I  would not be getting another renewal - that the practice could get in trouble should they continue to prescribe the Ativan.  (I live in Germany)

That evening I went home and started to read what I had done by taking the 1 mg each day for approx 16 weeks.  I am determined to get off of these drugs.

I started two weeks ago with a reduction to .75 mg for one week and had no symptoms.  I then further reduced to .50 - and have been here for about five days.  I have some mild symptoms now.  I will stay on this .50 dose for the time being until I am ready to further reduce. So I know from here on out I have to reduce slowly and could use some support.  Thank you very much.

Hello  lilly maria  Welcome to Benzobuddies

We are glad that you have found our community. Well done for starting your taper.  Benzodiazepines should be tapered slowly.  It doesn't take long to become physically dependent on benzodiazepines.  Withdrawal can be a very challenging time, I found that being among those who understand made it a little easier.

Tapering slowly is the safest and best way to withdraw.  I suggest that you read Professor Ashton's Manual  It will explain this in further detail.  The general tapering guidelines are to cut the daily dose by between 5% and 10% every 10 - 14 days. You can alter the schedule according to how you are feeling.  The aim is to keep any withdrawal symptoms manageable.

We have a great community here of knowledgeable and friendly people who understand this process.  They will be willing to share their experience with you.  Feel free to ask questions so that members can respond
