How long does the burning brain and head pressure last on average?

This symptom is making my life hell along with my severe insomnia. At 2.5 months off everything, the burning and pressure seem worse now. How long does it take to ease? Anything I can do? Is it possible this can last forever? If so, not sure I can live with it.

Hi!  I am going through the exact same thing.  I am now 2 months off all psych meds and the burning brain and pressure along with all my other w/d symptoms:  chronic insomnia, burning, tingling, numbness, vibrations throughout body and head, adrenaline surges, myoclonic jerks, blurry vision, hearing problems, dp/dr., feeling like I am going insane or will die at any moment etc. r all extremely intense.  These have all gotten worse in the past couple of weeks and seem 2 b getting worse day by day.  It is also scaring the hell out of me.  I am just hoping they will start 2 get better soon.

It was about 5-6 months for me - no, on second thought, from beginning of taper, till it subsided from clonazepam, it was abou 11 months.

However, I also had to get off of risperdal, so after a few months without it, I jumped back in it all when I tapered risperdal.  So it all lasted a while - now it's all gone though!  And it will go away for you as well!!!

Over a year and still dealing with this

15 months out still have it. :( dos not mean it will last this long for you. Many people get better much faster. I'm dealing with hormonal issues too and  it can be causing the burning brain too.

Love and healing

Keep pushing it will get better. Belive it and it will happen

Oh geez,

So, 5-6months maybe if I am lucky or 1 year or more if I am not. Is this ever permanent for anyone?

OP please explain what you mean by "burning brain."  The brain can't feel pain.  Is the burning sensation somewhere else in your head?  I have had trigeminal nerve burning for many years that causes burning pain behind my eyes and sinuses and it even goes into my teeth but it's not in my brain.  Just wondering if we're talking about the same thing.

I had the burning brain feeling for a while. I kept telling my wife, "it feels like my brain's on fire," and I thought only another benzo could put it out. I'm 2.25 months out, and find that that symptom has abated. Still some pressure--like a tight band around my head--but it's not too bad. The symptoms, I'm finding, are like "whack-a-mole." One goes away then another pops out its ugly head. For me, now, the intrusive/obsessive thoughts feel unbearable, but my body doesn't really hurt. There's always something, it seems, but full healing is more than possible: it's promised. Sending you healing vibes!

Well, it feels like burning brain even though I know the brain is not supposed to feel pain. It is mainly forehead, temple and behind eyes.

No "whack a mole" symptom pattern for me. All my "moles" are strong and fierce. Lucky your burning brain got better. I think the tightness and pressure is worse than the burning.  I think I have the worst 4 symptoms all at intense levels - insomnia, head pressure, anxiety, depression. A grand slam.

Is full healing really promised?

IMO, benzo withdrawal probably affects the Bulbar Bundle at the base of the brain and also the Trigeminal nerve that is connected to the Bulbar Bundle.  I believe that in some cases it causes inflammation of these structures and maybe even some demyelination (damage to the protective sheath that covers neural pathways).  I think the "burning brain" symptom is actually Trigeminal nerve burning pain (Trigeminal neuralgia).  It's called TN2.  I think this also is causing the sensation of head pressure, especially behind the eyes and sinuses and even into the front, upper teeth.  If you google and look at diagrams of the Trigeminal nerve pathways, you'll see what I mean.  I've been trying to get to the bottom of this for a long time.  Been burning for years...there's some sort of benzo connection here, IMO.  The only thing that helps with the burning is gabapentin.

I'm almost 3 months out and had both those symptoms in full force until 2.5 months. I felt it subsiding, specially the weird fire-y nerve feeling around last Friday and it slowly waned until Tuesday where it basically didn't exist anymore (along with head pressure!). So I guess around 2.5-3 months after I was no longer using Benzos.

Almost 2 months off for me and I have the 4 same main symptoms. However, the depression and head pressure are off the charts. I'm seeing a therapist, but it's not helping much at all. I was actually in a mental hospital for about 10 days in mid July. Hell on Earth, I feel your pain!!

My personal experience has been that my brain has most definitely felt pain..  I don't know where you're getting info that says one's brain can't feel pain - but that makes absolutely no sense to me.. my brain felt like it was burning up, felt like nails were being driven into it, felt like it was liquid, sloshing around in my head.. alternatively, it felt like quadrants of it were numb, or had holes in it.. then, headaches of the worst kind..

I don't think I'm unique or anything, but I do know my brain can certainly feel pain - wish it couldn't! : )

Thank u so much for this , my chiropractor gives me this bs that we can't feel anything in our brain but what do I say this is . My brain literally feels like disconnected wires sparking and it aches , it hurts , sometimes sharp pain , sometimes whooshiness, sometimes feels like someone is drilling a hole . If it's not my brain , then I wonder what else it is . I've going through it all evening fir about 3 hours now .

Everyone is different so nobody knows

But it won't last forever

Your job is to live day by day

Your brain will fix itself it just takes a long time

I am 28 months out and much better but not totally healed

The brain itself has no pain receptors.  Once inside the skull, a surgeon can operate on the brain without anesthesia, with the patient fully awake.  But the nerves that connect the body to the brain stem area can transmit pain.  Damage to branches of the trigeminal nerve that course throughout the head, face and mouth can cause pain and sensations of burning and pressure.  This can become so severe that surgery is necessary to correct it.  My hypothesis (guess) is that benzo withdrawal can damage the myelin sheaths of nerves that connect to the brain stem and cause the symptoms we are complaining about.

I'm 14 month and both still come in and out for me. I heard it does go away eventually...

I totally understand the burning brain feeling. For me, It feels like someone dumped acid in my head. I get it when I am very stressed.

Hi there, I'm a month a head of you and had exactly the same thing. I thought it would never stop. Then it got really bad for a week and stopped! Just like that! It's been 4 days and it's all gone. I'm sitting here with baited breath praying it won't reappear. So far so good. Hopefully that's the end of the burning and head pressure at least :)

Stay strong, I know it is hell but it will pass, sending hugs to you all, I know how brutal it is  :smitten:

Wack o mole describes it perfectly!! I'm almost a year out and was doing well the first six months. The last few months it's been a different pain every day. The stomach pain returned with a vengeance, back pain, now the last few days neck pain. Also the insomnia continues and so the anxiety and depression are at an all time high. It's easy to think I'm never going to heal. Thanks to everyone on these threads. I could not get through my really bad days if it wasn't for all of you great buddies.

Wishing all of us complete healing.
